Gerald "Jerry" Arthur Halbert CPT Gerald A. Halbert U.S.A. Ret., 74, died on Saturday, August 22, 2015, at Martha Jefferson Hospital due to a short struggle with cancer.Born in Los Angeles, Calif., to Harold William Halbert and Mary Angela Shore Halbert, he spent his childhood in various California towns. After a year at Santa Monica City College, he joined the United States Army as an enlisted man and served in both the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. During the course of his military career, he completed OCS, served in Vietnam as both an artillery and intelligence officer, and received numerous citations, including the Bronze Star and the MacArthur Leadership Award. Of all his military qualifications, he was most proud of his Master Parachutist Badge. After his military retirement, he joined the Foreign Science and Technology Center and later the National Ground Intelligence Center as an analyst.In addition to being an insatiable reader, he taught adult Sunday school at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church for many years, and he volunteered for ten years at the Albemarle County Police Department. A devoted husband, he is survived by his beloved wife, Patsy Hicks Halbert of Earlysville; his son, Dr. Harold William Halbert of Norristown, Pa.; his daughter, Jennifer P. Halbert of Baltimore, Md.; and his brother, Conrad Halbert, of Van Nuys, Calif.A graveside service with Military honors will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2015, at Holly Memorial Gardens, 3251 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, VA 22911. At 7 p.m. that evening memorial service will be held at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church, 674 Woodlands Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22901.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society at 1445 East Rio Road, Charlottesville VA 22901.Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hillandwood.com
