Darryl Halbert Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by All Veterans Funeral & Cremation - Westminster on Jan. 22, 2026.
Darryl Eugene Halbert was born January 25,1964 on the Westside of Chicago IL to Charles Halbert Sr and Mary Elizabeth Halbert. He was the third born of what would become five children in a truly loving and blessed family.

Being the middle child provided Darryl with special motivation and an uncommon drive, which served to propel him into becoming a standout in so many endeavors in his life. He was a graduate of Prosser High School in Chicago. He later became a graduate of Mississippi State University in Starkville MS. From there he decided to enlist in the Army (serving in the 101st Airborne Division) and was a veteran of the first Persian Gulf War. After being honorably discharged in 1993, he joined the Fulton County, Georgia police department. During 27 years of dedicated service, he ultimately rose through the ranks to become Chief of Police, earning the respect and admiration of many Fulton County colleagues. His distinguished career inspired his son to pursue his own career in law enforcement – Christopher currently serves as a dedicated member of the Chicago Police Department, and his father could not have been more proud of him! In 2003, Darryl went on to earn his master's degree from Columbus State University in Columbus GA.

Darryl approached life with a resolute fierceness and fearlessness that permeated both his professional and private lives. These character traits were on full display when he took on skydiving and long-distance motorcycle riding as hobbies. He loved the mental and physical challenges of his numerous Iron Butt rides and the fellowship of additional "wind therapy" with the Black Angels and his beloved MTF riding clubs. These adventures carried him to the farthest corners of the country, including traversing Canada en route to Hyder, Alaska. (He had nearly 600,000 miles on various saddles!) He met and added a new "farkle" named Joan to his bike in 2014 (and officially made her his bride in 2022). He was able to share the love of the open roads with her, riding to 45 states and Canada together. He also developed a love for golf, a sport that appealed to his need for a mental challenge, as he was always driving himself towards excellence.

Despite all his remarkable experiences and accomplishments, Darryl remained a humble and quiet man who reserved his greatest passion for family. For Darryl, family was the center of his universe. Among his fondest memories were the summer trips to his father's hometown of West Point MS for family reunions. During those reunions, he and his siblings and a host of cousins would have to sleep on the floor in the den of his fraternal Aunt Bessie's house, because there were not enough beds to accommodate all the youngsters. Those were the type of memories that brought him immense joy. In that same spirit, as an adult, he often hosted the annual Halbert Thanksgiving reunions that were comprised of his dad, mom, his siblings and an assortment of relatives and loved ones. In doing so he insured that the legacy of love that he was born into would be carried into the next generation.

As a teenager Darryl was baptized into the Church of Christ, and he would go on to live a life that is best described in Matthew Chapter 12 verse 35: "A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things…"

Darryl transitioned from this life on 1/13/2026. Loved ones who transitioned before him were his mother Mary Elizabeth Halbert; his father Charles Halbert Sr; and his brother, Victor James Halbert.

Darryl leaves to cherish his memory: His wife, Joan Daugherty-Halbert; his son, Christopher Halbert; his stepson, Jeff Baptist; his brother, Charles (Patricia) Halbert Jr; his sister, Nylaina Halbert; his brother, Rodney (Duwan Lovely) Halbert; along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Matthew Chapter 25 verse 21: "Well done, good and faithful servant"
