Howard Shifflett Obituary

The angels came to take him home to be with his heavenly Father on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at his home. Revelations (21:4) tells us that God shall wipe away all tears from thy eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away. He knew that the second set of footprints was God carrying him until the angels came to take him to his heavenly home. He was born July 4, 1938 to his late parents, Howard C. Shifflett Sr. and Claris Shifflett Johnson. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife and soul mate, Virginia P. Shifflett; one son, Keith Shifflett; one granddaughter, one grandson and two great grandchildren (all estranged); his stepdaughter, Rhonda Duncan and Michael; stepson, Duane R. Tooley and and his wife, Doronda; his cherished step grandson, Zander Duncan known as PaPa's little man; his brothers, Irvine Shifflett and his wife, Jerry, Melvin Shifflett and friend, Diane, and Wayne Shifflett and his wife, Judy; his best friends, Roy and Sally Wyant and Billy Wright; and love of his pastor, church family and friends. All he came in contact with was a friend and he never met a stranger. He retired in 2003 from the University of Virginia with 25 years of service in the Housing Division. He was a Vietnam Veteran and served in the United States Army. He was a lifetime member of the Stanardsville American Legion Post 128 and served as past commander for three years and was the 13th District Finance Officer for eight years. He very much respected the love of his country and his American Legionnaires. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 19, 2015 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Ryan Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail, Ruckersville, VA 22968.A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Whiteheart officiating, assisted by Pastors Johnny Hartless and Wendell Lamb. Interment will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Pkwy., Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.An online guestbook is available at www.ryanfuneral.com.Ryan Funeral Home of Ruckersville, Virginia is handling the arrangements.
