Jeanne Cross Obituary

Jeanne Cross of Charlottesville, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, March 19th, 2023.

Dorothy Jeanne Kerr was born to the late Richard and Anna Kerr in Carlisle Pennsylvania on March 26, 1946. She grew up with her four siblings in Harrisburg and graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia. In 1997 she retired after 24 years with the University of Virginia. Jeanne started as a typist and advanced to become a full-time faculty member, spending her career working on the Papers of James Madison, a documentary editing project sponsored by the University of Virginia and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. In her retirement, she continued to be engaged in intellectual and community work, serving as editor for the Compassionate Friends monthly newsletter, volunteering for Relay For Life, and taking on free-lance editorial work.

Jeanne was a devoted wife, and a loving mother and grandmother. She put others first and took pleasure in making people happy around her. She will be remembered fondly for her generosity and affection, her pride in her family, and her excellent pickles.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her son, John Sisson, and her beloved husband of 32 years, Bob Cross.

Jeanne is survived by her son, Richard, his wife Jenny, and their children, Charlie and Celia, and by her son, Robert and his children, Rachel and Connor.

A celebration of Jeanne's life will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Teague funeral Service in Charlottesville. Family and friends will be invited to share stories beginning at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Jeanne's name to Compassionate Friends or Relay For Life.

Dear Richard and Rob and your families,
Mike and I are so sorry to hear of Jeanne's passing. She was dear to us, and we are finding it hard to get this sad news. Unfortunately, we will not be able to be with you on April 1 since we are still in Florida. We enjoyed many, many memorable times with Jeanne and Bob. God Bless all of you. Sarah Daniel
