Jeffrey Barth Obituary

Jeffrey Theodore Barth, Ph.D.

May 29, 1949 - March 8, 2025

Dr. Jeffrey "Jeff" Theodore Barth passed on March 8, 2025, in Charlottesville, Va. Jeff was born in New Brunswick, NJ on May 29, 1949. He was preceded in death by father August Theodore Barth and mother Nettie Eileen Danford Barth. He grew up in Cranbury, NJ and attended Dayton Elementary School and the Peddie School in Hightstown.

He was married to and is survived by Pamela Leah Bellthe love of his life. He had an incredible love for his family. He adored and is survived by his children Adam Theodore Barth (spouse Allison Jaye Baer Barth) and Kellie Barth McQuade (spouse Ian Douglas Thomson McQuade), grandchildren Aiden Theodore Barth, Asher Jay Barth, Isla Bell McQuade, Connor Chase McQuade as well as his sister Wendy Barth O'Brien, brother Douglas Danford Barth, sister-in-law Pamela Pearson Barth and nieces Courtney White and Nancee Barth Hofheimer.

Jeffrey received his BA in psychology from Vanderbilt University. He continued in his pursuit of education at the George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, where he received his MA and Ph.D. in psychology. By 1980, he had completed a Clinical Psychology Internship at Ft. Logan Mental Health Center in Colorado as well as a Clinical Neuropsychology Fellowship at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Simultaneously, he developed the Neuropsychology Laboratory and the Behavioral Medicine Center at Western State Hospital in Staunton, Va.

Jeff's professional accomplishments and awards were innumerable. He held the diplomate certification from the American Board of Professional Psychology and the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology, was a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the National Academy of Neuropsychology and received several distinguished awards. Dr. Barth was also well known for his pioneering work on mild traumatic brain injury and sports concussion, and the Sports as a Laboratory Assessment Model or SLAM for brief baseline and post-injury neurocognitive evaluation of athletes. This method of pre- and post-concussion assessment has become the foundation for mild traumatic brain injury evaluation and management for athlete safety and return-to-play decision-making in the NFL, NHL, NCAA, and many high school programs across the U.S.

Jeff also spoke fondly about his professional colleagues, his "Lab-family," led by matriarch Dr. Donna Broshek, and his basketball buddies. In a note he left behind, he wrote that he had "been so lucky to have so many friends to love."

His professional accomplishments have left their mark on the world, and he will be remembered by the friends and family he cherished and who will continue to cherish him greatly.

His memorial service will be held on Friday, March 21 at 11 a.m. in Charlottesville, Va at Westminster Presbyterian Church (400 Rugby Road).

I was so sorry to learn of Jeff''s death. I served, decades ago, on the Personnel Committee at Westminster. Because we were often dealing with sensitive personal issues, our meetings could be tense, but Jeff always brought his consideration, humor and wisdom. I have never forgotten the time we spent together. My sympathy in your painful loss.

Pamela, I am saddened to learn of Jeff's passing. My Husband Dennis and I have fond memories of attending parties in your home. I also knew Jeff professionally after consulting him following a stroke. My recovery would have been incomplete without his expertise and guidance. Sincerely, Charlotte Fitch

I attended Peddie with Jeff who was a year ahead of me. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. While we lost touch after Peddie, he was always so kind to me at Peddie. Jeff was a total class act with an infectious smile and was rock solid character wise. My prayers go out to his family. Ralph Davies

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Barth family in this time of great sorrow! Jeff was respected in so many different ways but above all he was a great husband, father, grandfather and a dear friend of ours for many, many years. May he rest in peace and his family remember the many great memories of a true Virginia gentlemen.

Prayers for peace and strength to family. I met Dr. Barth when he was a customer at my restaurant the St. Maarten Cafe on the corner. In later years I was in his office with a medical need. A very special man. God Bless family during this time
