John Gresh Obituary

John James Gresh

July 15, 1942 - June 26, 2025

John James Gresh, of Keswick, VA, passed away peacefully at home on June 26, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, he was an exceptional high school athlete, and excelled in football, basketball, and track. He carried that competitive spirit and discipline into his academic career, earning degrees from Duquesne University, where he served as President of Phi Kappa Theta, and Catholic University Law School.

After graduating from law school, John got into his MG convertible and drove west until he reached the Pacific Ocean, starting his career in Southern California as an attorney and real estate investor. He soon achieved entrepreneurial success, buying and transforming a small motorcycle accessory company, California Sidecar, into a brand known globally for its superior craftsmanship and quality. A willingness to take calculated risks, his tenacity to fight through adversity, and ability to earn loyalty with generosity and mutual respect was the throughline in the 40+ years in business.

A passionate sailor, John navigated the waters of Southern California & the Caribbean and completed a trans-Atlantic crossing with his kids. He then spent 2 months sailing the Mediterranean coast with his family a testament to his adventurous spirit and love of the ocean.

John loved a Philadelphia cheesesteak, hosting lobster bakes, watching sports, taking vacations with his friends, and making an ice-cold Beefeater martini. John was a devoted husband and father. He provided his family with a comfortable home, quality educations, and opportunities for world travel.

John is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Arden Gresh; and his children, Kelley Gresh (son-in-law Paul Haller), Justin Gresh, and Ashley Gresh (son-in-law Andrew Richards).

John James Gresh leaves behind a legacy of success, and deep love from his family and friends. He will be profoundly missed and forever cherished.

A memorial service followed with a reception will be held on July 3, 2025, at 12 p.m. at Hill & Wood Funeral Home, 201 North 1ST Street, Charlottesville, VA.
