Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love - time is eternity.

Joe provided an anchor for my return visits to Charlottesville and a measure for whetehr or not I had lost mental acuity and debating skills compared to younger days. He often persuaded me to think differently. My deepest sympathy.

I knew Joe through our local MENSA organization and the Republican Party of Virginia. I always asked Joe to be our 5th District Congressional Committee parlimentarian because I knew he would be precise in his duties, with fairness to all. That was always his hallmark. And he was the best darned parlimentarian I have ever met!
I pray that Joe's legacy of service, camaraderie, and intellect will not be lost with his passing.

There was a Peter Pan quality to Joe (I don't mean a visual resemblance.) Joe provided a hint that we did not have to move on, become boring, and conform ourselves to norms for the sake of comfortable living. Meanwhile, it was also good to know that Joe would be the same guy in the same place when we returned to it. He served as a human touchstone for a lot of us. I am sad to learn he is gone.

Joe was a wonderful man, eager to share what he knew and a fast friend to those who would listen. A bit of the Hall has passed into history and he will be missed.

It was a privilege and honor to have known Joe since 1981. All who knew him are better for having known him, and the world is a poorer place without him. Through hard work and high character he became an institution in the state Republican party, Charlottesville, the University community, and the Jefferson Society. My deepest sympathy to his sister and his friends.

Joe, it is impossible to think of you as not with us. To me, you will always be standing at the back of Jeff Hall, commenting on proceedings. You have touched all of us passing through. Kathleen

I cannot imagine Jeff Society without Mr. Bishop there. He is a part of many memories of my time in the Hall. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I remember Mr. Bishop as someone who always had the flavor of debate in his mouth whether it was at a Republican event or in the Hall. May the Lord bless you all in this time of loss and forever more. His Love & light, Monique (CLAS 2002)

While our paths seldom crossed in recent years, I will always remember Joe as a principled, highly intelligent, and friendly man -- loyal to the causes he embraced and to those who shared his insights and beliefs about the human condition and governance. I will always be thankful to Joe for his assistance to me in a Charlottesville City Council race eons ago. My deepest sympathies to Joe's sister, his other family members, and to all those who he befriended during his time with us.

Joe was a great institution within the Jefferson Society at the University of Virginia. He carried the history of the organization and was always willing to share his knowledge and stories with Hall members. We missed him at the Summer reunion and it is very sad to think we'll never see him there again. My condolences to his sister; his passing is a loss to us all.
