Joseph Viglione Obituary

EARLYSVILLE

Joseph Viglione, 81, of Earlysville, Virginia and formerly of Staunton, Virginia passed away Monday evening, May 21, 2007, at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born January 7, 1926, in Ridgway, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Luigi and Angelina Viglione.

On VJ Day, August 14, 1945, he was united in marriage with Theresa Rita (Girard) Viglione, with whom he shared a blessed union of 56 years, prior to her death on March 15, 2002. As a man who was truly devoted to his family, Joe considered one of his greatest accomplishments to be the love and care he provided to his wife during the final two years of her illness.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he began a long and successful career in the food industry following his discharge. For over 50 years, he ran the food service for Westinghouse Corporation (later McQuay) in Verona, Virginia. During that time he also established a catering business and was later joined by his son Mark; giving birth to "Viglione & Son".

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers William "Gigi", Johnny, Paul "Mike", Jimmy, Romeo and Benny Viglione.

He is survived by one brother, Tony Viglione of Ridgway, Pennsylvania; his four children, Dr. William Viglione and his wife, Jo, of Earlysville, Virginia, Mark Viglione and his wife, Sharon, of Staunton, Dr. Michael Viglione and his partner, Dr. Matt Lesniak, of Chicago, Illinois, and Beth Marshall and her husband, Greg, of Staunton; a special nephew, Tony Viglione and his wife, Kathy, of Waynesboro, Virginia; six grandchildren, Jenny Phillips and her husband, Joe, of Charlottesville, Rebecca Frank and her husband, Brandon, of Eldersburg, Maryland, Laura Heck and her husband, Mike, of Richmond, Virginia, and, Brian Viglione, Stephanie Marshall and Stephen Marshall, all of Staunton, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Jessica and Jake Phillips of Charlottesville, Virginia and Lizzie Heck of Richmond, Virginia.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the University of Virginia doctors and nurses on the Oncology, Medical and Palliative Care units that cared for him in his final days. They are also grateful for the loving care provided by Arlene Harvey, Dr. Andy Macfarlan and Dr. Tim Short and "Papa's" wonderful team from Hospice of the Piedmont.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2007, at the Hamrick Funeral Home, 18 West Frederick Street, Staunton.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2007, a the Church of the Incarnation, 1465 Incarnation Drive, Charlottesville.

The family will receive friends at the church, from 6 until 7 p.m., prior to the Mass. Interment will take place 11 a.m. Saturday May 26, 2007, at Thornrose Cemetery, West Beverly Street, Staunton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the American Cancer Society or to the Hospice of the Piedmont.

Dear Dr. Viglione and family (Laura - in particular),

I just wanted to make sure that you knew I was thinking of you and that you are in my prayers. To be the kindest people, I'm sure that your dad, though I didn't know him, was an inspiration to you. God bless your family as you make the transition of saying goodbye. May you continue to learn from the life he lived and be encouraged that you will see him, yet again, in the resurrection to come. God is faithful, all the time, even in our darkest moments - you will walk "through the valley of the shadow of death" and He will hold your hand all the way through!

We will miss Uncle Joe. I am sure he is reunited with his 6 brothers in heaven and they are having a great time playing cards right now.
