Kathryn Ewald Obituary

Kathryn "Katie" Ewald

Kathryn "Katie" Ewald passed peacefully on July 31, 2021, with her family by her side. She was born on June 3, 1957, and grew up in Garden City, N.Y. and Charlottesville, Va. She was the daughter of the late John A. Ewald and Jane "Kitchie" Tolleson.

Katie graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall High School and Sweetbriar College. She spent the early 80s in New York City working for MTV and the Bush campaign. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Dorset, Vermont and thrived as a businesswoman. Katie started Vermont's first country music radio station, Cat Country and later founded Vermont Wood Pellet Company.

Not only a businesswoman, Katie was an philanthropist, consistently contributing to her local church, hospitals and area scholarships. Katie was a member of the Green Mountain Club and was instrumental in bringing SheJumps, a woman's outdoor leadership initiative to the Dorset area.

Her energetic lifestyle not only created a presence in her community, but everywhere she went. The queen of outfits - Katie was always dressed to be the life of the party with her fearless and fun fashion, most importantly her pom pom trucker hats and cowgirl boots, stealing the show wherever she went. She could only out-do her outfits by pulling out her harmonica and giving an impromptu rendition of some country or blues song to the crowd's delight.

Katie was unstoppable when it came to her love of outdoor adventure. She skied extensively throughout the United States and could be seen "skinning up'" the mountain on a weekly basis. She not only loved to ski, but was passionate about hiking, biking and riding horses. She was always looking for the next big adventure and was ready for anything.

While Katie spent most of her adult life in Dorset, Vermont, she was always pushing herself to seek the next challenge. In October 2020, she took a leap of faith and moved to Carbondale, Colorado. Katie's time in Colorado was one of the happiest times of her life, exploring all the Rockies have to offer.

A businesswoman, philanthropist, and outdoor enthusiast, Katie's happiest role in life was being a mother to her two sons, Austen and Oliver Adams. Her boys describe her as the most amazing mother who had the biggest presence wherever she went. Besides her two sons, Katie is survived by her brothers, Hi and Hill Ewald, both of Charlottesville, Va., and their families.

A burial will be held in Charlottesville, Va., and a celebration of life will be announced soon.

Katie lit up the room at Rosemary Hall - was so happy to run into her in NYC after we graduated. Always positive. Rest in Peace - a beautiful soul.

I am so saddened to hear this heartbreaking news. Katie was special . A bright light with a huge smile. That is what I remember the most, her giggle and her smile. She was into adventure early on . I have memories of going to her house to play and all she wanted to do was drag me through the woods . Long trecks until we could see route 250.
I saw her last , 7 years ago at our high school reunion, and I am grateful for that time with her to catch up and give her a hug.
My prayers to all of the family and friends who loved her , and love her still. To Hi, to Hill, to Nat, and to all
The picture on her obituary says it all .

It is with a heavy heart that I read of Katie's passing. Although I had not seen Katie in decades, her positive energy lingers for a lifetime, a truly special person. My thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with her family.

Though I really only knew Katie as a young woman at Sweet Briar I always admired her spunk and love of life. She was a joy.

Katie lived life to the fullest. I don't think I ever knew anyone who enjoyed life and was as energetic, fun loving and kind. She was an inspiration and a remarkable human being. We were classmates and friends at CRH. My sincerest condolences to her family, Nat, and friends.

Such tragic news. I hadn't seen her in a long time but I had heard how much fun she was and how she enjoyed life. My thoughts are with her brothers and sons.

Katie was the only Ewald I didn't know, which seems like such a shame. Most sincere condolences to the whole family.

Katie was my classmate, and we shared membership in several college clubs. My memory of her will always be her cheerful demeanor. She always seemed to be smiling and enjoying life. This is a heartbreaking loss. Prayers to her family.
