Sylvia Birch Kidd Sylvia (Birch) Kidd, 94, of Charlottesville, passed away peacefully with her family close by on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the Hospice House in Charlottesville. Born on September 13, 1919, in Buena Vista, she was the second daughter of the late Joshua and Nellie Birch. As of April 2014, Sylvia was the eldest of three living sisters all in their 90s, with Evelyn Geraldine (Birch) Shepherd (93) of Natural Bridge, Virginia, and Virginia (Birch) Ruth (90) of Dundalk, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis A. Kidd of Scottsville in 1984; two sisters, the eldest, Frances, and the youngest, Violet; her only brother, Benny; her daughter, Sandra Lee (Kidd) Blough; and two grandsons, Josiah and Noah Blough. In 1938, shortly after their marriage, Sylvia and Francis Kidd lived in Charlottesville, and later lived in Richmond, Ettrick, and Colonial Heights. In 1963, they built a house in South Boston, Virginia, which was home for 45 years where Sylvia worked in retail sales at Faulkner & Lawson Drug Store, Catos and Roses; as well as textile manufacture J.P. Stevens. She was an avid gardener, great cook, loved to travel, and was a long-time member of the Center United Church of Christ. After relocating to Charlottesville at the age of 87, Sylvia became a member of the Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, and frequently enjoyed the company of family, good friends and close neighbors. In addition to her sisters, survivors include her son, Francis William and daughter-in-law, Carole T. Kidd, of Surfside Beach, South Carolina; three grand-daughters, Jennifer J. and husband, David Sandmann, of Largo, Florida, Melissa L. Stone of Takoma Park, Maryland, and Catherine V. and husband, Todd Hall, of Martinsburg, West Virginia; three great-grandsons, Sylvester and Gabriel Rossi, and Blake Hall; a son-in-law, Robin M. Blough of Star Tannery, Virginia; many nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Scottsville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
