Lani Peppers-Angle Obituary

Lani Peppers-Angle, 66, well-known in the equestrian circles of Charlottesville, Virginia for more than 30 years, died on the morning of Friday, September 12, 2025, while riding her horse.

Lei Lani Mae Peppers was born October 19, 1958 in Independence, Missouri, to LeRoy Calvin Peppers and Lei Lenore EnTip Foo Peppers. Lani was proud of her Asian heritage, which she inherited from her mother's family. Lani's grandfather, Prescott Foo, was an ATF agent noted for cleaning out Prohibition gangsters in Honolulu. Her grandparents moved to the mainland after retiring from government service and continued pastoral ministry and work on R.L.D.S. publications. Later, Lani's mother moved to Independence and was active in the Hawaiian community. She passed on her love for Hawaiian traditions to Lani, who organized many luaus for friends and family.

Lani attended the Fort Osage High School in Independence and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1981. She was working as a radiologic technologist at the University of Missouri at Kansas City when she met John "Fritz" Angle, MD, whom she married in 1991. The couple moved to Charlottesville, where Dr. Angle began his affiliation with Interventional Radiology at the University of Virginia Health Science Center.

Lani showed horses at Hunter-Jumper shows and worked as the assistant manager of Dover Saddlery for 8 years. She drove for Meals on Wheels for 15 years, and was active in community philanthropy, especially with Planned Parenthood. An excellent athlete, she played polo and ice hockey and also served as a hockey referee. Most recently, Lani and Fritz had taken up blue water sailing and were looking forward to a catamaran vacation this fall. Lani was known for her kindness, honesty, perseverance, open-mindedness, loyalty, good humor, sense of adventure, and colorful Missourian phrases.

In addition to her husband, Lani is survived by four children: William Angle (Christine Dallavalle) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Andrew Angle (Leslie Gillet) of Cumberland, Virginia; Prescott Angle (Saki Ariyoshi) of Fukuoka, Japan; and Averill Angle of Chelmsford, Massachusetts; two grandchildren: Chiara and Nicolas; her brother Rick Peppers, of Independence, Missouri; her cousin and close friend Frances Jaynes Hammond, of Houston, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her mother, father, and older brother, David Lee Peppers.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to one of Lani's favorite charities, the Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA: https://www.caspca.org/memorial-wall.
