Leo Arico Obituary

Leo Joseph Arico Jr.

July 8, 1952 - May 9, 2025

Some words ought not to be in my obituary. Two of them are electric scooter. Leo Joseph Arico, Jr. was born at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, Maryland on July 8, 1952, the eldest child of Leo Joseph Arico of Brooklyn, New York and Helen Florence Pridmore Arico of Gaffney, South Carolina. He is predeceased by his infant brother, Louis, whose only day was the 5th of August 1958. He is survived by his wife of many years, Phillis Emma Sylvester; and their son, Louis Arico, and his wife, Emily Hope VanNoy Arico, and their sons, Leo and Xander. Also living are his daughter, Quillan Lee Arico of Charlottesville, Virginia; and step-daughter, Emily Christine Curtis of Brooklyn, New York. Leo has one deceased sibling, Paula Marie Arico of Tallahassee, Florida, who is survived by her children, Jordan Arico and John Paul Holwell; and one living sibling, Arthur Louis Arico and his wife, Tricia Maddox Goodloe Arico of Charlottesville, Virginia. Leo attended Saint Louis Elementary and Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Virginia, before enrolling at the University of Virginia, graduating with his class of 1974. His life's parade of careers are laborer at the University's Rotunda Restoration, U.Va. hospital attendant, the Mousetrap restaurant prep and line cook, rebar installer at Scott Stadium Expansion 1977-1980, roofing contractor for nearly twenty years, catering bartender, event lighting technician, and licensed wastewater plant operator as his last full-time job. Leo worked part-time as custodian for the Center for Contemporary Arts, also called Live Arts. All in Charlottesville. Live Arts was Leo's favorite place to volunteer, constructing sets and sometimes performing on stage. He also played the lead role in a locally produced horror movie, "Mister Angerhead," earning Leo a Bacon number of 3. Leo had his retirement years during his twenties, especially hitch-hiking with Phillis across the United States and British Columbia, once riding in a railroad boxcar, another time sending for helicopter rescue on Vancouver Island. All the stories about Leo are true. In his later years, Leo woke up, walked to the bathroom, and stood up to do his business. The rest of the day was a bonus. His most satisfying rewards for living are the fine times had with Phillis, all their children, children's friends, and all other friends and partners, coworkers, cast members, clients, neighbors, and people he happened to meet. The small animals that greeted him and all the adventures. The stories, mostly, are true. Among the best are with Phillis, organizing and hosting several orphans' Thanksgivings in the 1990s, and the renovations and additions to their property at 222 Douglas Avenue in Charlottesville; the city inspector commented, "You might have the only bidet in Belmont." Leo could make people laugh, which made him happy. This ability sprouted around the age of five, and he fertilized it ever after. Best advice for telling a joke: Accurately remember the punch line- then work backwards to reveal the elements. Regrettably, Leo's favorite jokes are not suitable for print in a family publication. You have to go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours

A man that was true, friendly and always funny. A hard worker and always big and buxum but friendly as a teddy bear with a smile that always lit up our world. I knew him through the 70´s at rebuilding uva football stadium till the 2000nds . We will all miss him but do not feel weird if you get a tap on your shoulder from behind from his soul at a play downtown.JGjr

Seeing the light glistening in his eye when he saw that I was his prey for the dumbest joke he could think of was a wonderful treat. Spending time with him backstage before making an entrance was a surefire way to release all concerns and give everything to the character that I wanted to inhabit. Leo's humility, truth-telling, joy, and warmth live on in my memory. He held the bar very low for me: remember the punch line. That's all. Journey Well, friend.

Went to college with Leo and enjoyed his company, jokes and spaghetti (that I'm sure his mom had shown him how to make, having been fed by her once or twice). Beneath it all, there was a kindness about Leo that I remember well. I'm glad I knew him.

Leo and JC (aka Liberty Roofing) put the roof on my house in 1990. Never forget them listening to Enrico Caruso while working. RIP Leo.

Heartfelt condolences to Phyllis, Arthur and family. Leo was one of the kindest and funniest people I have ever known. He lit up a room or gathering as soon as he entered. Leo knew more jokes than most professional comedians. I never heard the same one twice. We drifted apart after our younger and more energetic days, but we´re still friends.
Godspeed my friend. I know you will lighten up the afterlife for all of your family and friends already there, plus the many strange souls you will meet upon this new journey. Rest In Laughter.

Thanks for the wisdom, the laughs and the good times, Leo. My deepest sympathy to Phillis, Louis, Quillan and their families, and Arthur and the Goodloes, too.

Leo replaced our roof in 1986 and it was fun getting to know him. We also loved seeing him perform at Live Arts over the years
He was a kind and man. My heart goes out to his family.

One of a kind. Associated with this good man as a student, colleague at the mousetrap, and a plethora of touch and goes over the years. So gentle. Embodied a spirit of love.

Leo leaves me with many memories, most of them with a laugh. One of my favorites is when he said of our softball team, the Amazing Miracle Braves, that "we play pretty good ball for a team that averages less than two legs per man." A real Renaissance man, a true friend, a raconteur of the first order. Nobody like him.

Leo had a tremendous sense of humor and was a vital part of the Live Arts family. He was game to try almost anything, and had an enviable catalogue of jokes in his head. If you were lucky, he´d share one with you, and then another. I´m going to miss this soft spoken, humble, salt of the earth man.
