Lorene D. Shifflett, 79, died peacefully and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, surrounded by loved ones. Born on August 31, 1938, she leaves to cherish her memory her husband of nearly 62 years, Bernard Shifflett; son, John Shifflett and wife, Doris Shifflett; granddaughter, Beth Shifflett; grandson, Jeremy Shifflett and his wife, Chelsea Shifflett; grandson, John Shifflett and his wife, Melissa Shifflett; grandson, Shane Shifflett; granddaughter, Abigail Shifflett; great-granddaughter, Luci Shifflett; great-granddaughter, Emma Short; sister, Betty Shifflett; sister, Mary Paschall and her husband, Frank Paschall; sister, Mildred Sanders and her husband, Paul Sanders; brother, James Lamb; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The daughter of the late Henry and Hazel Lamb, she was preceded in death by her son, Bernard Shifflett Jr.; brother, Willie Lamb; brother, Malcolm Lamb; sister, Dora Shifflett; and sister, Peachy Jeffries. "Grandma", as she was known to many in her family and beyond, spent much of her life taking care of others. After raising two sons, she helped raise two grandsons and a granddaughter and two great-granddaughters. Feeding people, especially children, was one of her great joys. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, she would welcome the entire family over to celebrate a delicious meal and fellowship in the place she and her husband, Bernard, called home for 60 years. She worked as a lunch lady in the Greene County school system and loved seeing the hundreds of kids come through her line everyday. She was "Grandma" to half of the kids in Greene County. She also loved going to yard sales with her sister, Dora, on the weekends and playing cards, especially rummy. She lived in Greene County all of her life, but traveled throughout the United States, seeing Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Space Needle, the California Redwoods, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the Rocky Mountains, the Alamo and the Tennessee home of her favorite singer, Loretta Lynn. She leaves a legacy of love and care that will be remembered by her family for generations to come. In addition to her love of family and friends, she loved her flowers and sewing. She was a member of First Bible Baptist Church. The family will receive friends and loved ones at First Bible Baptist Church (United Christian Academy) in Ruckersville on Monday, August 6, 2018, from 11 a.m. until noon. The funeral service will begin at noon, followed by a graveside service at Holly Memorial Gardens at approximately 1:30 p.m. Preddy Funeral Home in Madison is in charge of arrangements.
