Louise Proffitt Obituary

Louise Fontaine Cadot Proffitt of Keswick, Virginia, departed this life to soar with the angels on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at home with her loving husband, Sterling, and son, Scott, by her side.

She was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 8, 1951, and was the daughter of Henry Meade Cadot and Agnus Allinson Cadot of Greenville, Delaware.

Louise graduated from the Tower Hill School in 1969. Subsequently, she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Skidmore College in New York in 1973. She also obtained her Master's Degree in Education from Lesley University in Massachusetts in 1974, then came to Charlottesville, Virginia, to receive a Master +30 Degree (Education Specialist) from the University of Virginia in 1980.

She worked as a Special Education teacher at Henley Middle School in Crozet, Virginia for one year in 1981, then as a Special Education teacher at Charlottesville High School from 1982-2007, when she took her well-earned retirement. Prior to her retirement, Louise was nominated for, humbled and appreciative to receive the "Golden Apple Award" for her dedication to and outstanding advocacy for her students.

Louise is predeceased by her parents, Henry and Agnus Cadot of Greenville, Delaware; and her brothers, Dickie of Wilmington, Delaware, and Andrew and his wife Lindsey of Portland, Maine.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and caring husband, Sterling C. Proffitt of Keswick, Virginia, to whom she was married for 42+ years; her son Andrew S. "Scotty" Proffitt, and his family, Tai Browne and their son, her only grandchild, Chandler Scott Proffitt, all of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Louise is further survived by her brother, H. Meade (Sandy) Cadot, of Hancock, New Hampshire; beloved niece, Virginia C. (Kyle) Fatima, and their twins, Anwar and Nora, all of New York City; brother-in-law, Carl D. "Chubby" (Becky) Profitt, III, and their sons, Cody (Faith) and their family, and Chad and his children, Rianon and Connor, all of Fluvanna County; nephew, Jeff, and his son, Robbie of Charlottesville; and many cousins and relatives from the Allinson side of the family, whom she loved very much.

In addition, it would be remiss not to mention some of her fellow and beloved teachers and friends from Charlottesville High School, Tom Bowman of West Virginia, Carol Zimorski of Albemarle County, Susan Jamme of Barboursville, and Mary Jane Ritchie of Crozet (Ladies of the Club +1). She also made some wonderful friends at Book Baskets, a non-profit organization established in 1995 whose goal is to encourage reading through the ownership of books. After retiring, Louise was a volunteer tutor at Literacy Volunteers to assist people wanting to get more adept with the English language.

Louise was a wonderful and devoted mother, wife, grandmother, role model and friend, and she will be sorely missed by all.

The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Laden and his staff of associates and nurses at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center at the University of Virginia Hospital and the staff at the Radiology Center at the UVA Primary Care Center for her care and management. In addition, our appreciation is extended to the Hospice of the Piedmont and the home attendees of BrightStar Care for all of their assistance and care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a memorial donation to the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and/or to Hospice of the Piedmont.

A service of Remembrance will be announced at a later date for sometime in April. It was Louise's wish that it be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, with a private interment for the family at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Condolences may be sent to the family at hillandwood.com.

I worked as a special education teacher at Buford Middle School while Louise was teaching at CHS. She was such a mentor for me and such a wonderful colleague. She had a wonderful, dry sense of humor along with a great heart for her students. She was always their strongest advocate, and I knew, as I passed my students along to the next level, she would take care of them and keep me informed of their successes.
