Marcia MacNaughton Obituary

Marcia Jean MacNaughton

July 29, 1934 - March 13, 2025

Trailblazer, brilliant, beautiful, and a role model for the ages for women, Marcia Jean MacNaughton died on Thursday, March 13, 2025 in Fishersville, VA. She was born in Brookhaven, MS, on July 29, 1934.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Pond MacNaughton Simpson, and Victor Boynton MacNaughton; as well as her brother, Jimmy Victor MacNaughton.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Virginia Lamb MacNaughton; and her three nieces, Joyce Folse (Tim), Lynda Pasma (Steve), and Susan Harman (Todd), who always knew her as dear Aunt Mar. She also leaves a beloved extended family of cousins, great-nieces and nephews, and a great-great nephew.

A graduate of Barnard College, Marcia studied at the University of London, attended law school at George Washington School of Law, and was a student at Columbia University Graduate School of Public Law and Government. Her dissertation as a Ph.D candidate was regarding Senator Sam J. Ervin and Congress. Marcia drafted speeches, press releases, and Congressional legislation during her time on Capitol Hill. She played a crucial role in assisting Senator Ervin during the Watergate investigations before Congress, that ultimately led to the historic resignation of President Richard M. Nixon.

Marcia eventually retired decades later, as a senior legal policy analyst with the United States Forest Service. Her expansive career paved the way for women who knew and admired her, including young girls who were her own family members...many of whom had no idea of her career accomplishments that today would rival some of our country's most admired women.

A longtime devoted fan of the Washington Nationals, it thrilled Marcia to see her beloved Nats win the World Series.

A private family service was held Monday March 17, 2025, in Fishersville, VA.

The family requests that any memorials be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN (stjude.org) or The Smithsonian (support.si.edu).

Arrangements have been entrusted to Charlton and Groome Funeral Home in Fishersville, VA.
