Nancy ("Nanny") Matilda Sprouse, age 79, of Crozet, VA, died on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis "Sonny" Linwood Clayton Sprouse; her sister, Lucille Thomas; and her infant grandson, Ryan Sprouse.
Nancy is survived by her only son, Jeff, and his wife Michelle of Greenwood, VA; her grandson, Hunter Loose of Keswick, VA; her granddaughter, Lauren Wood, and her husband, Dwayne, and their sons, Wade and Walker, of Earlysville, VA; her grandson, Logan, and his wife, Taylor, and sons, Easton and Haysen, of Charlottesville, VA; her granddaughter, Jordan, of Charlottesville, VA; her sister, Bettie Hutcherson, and her husband, Jim, of Stuarts Draft, VA; her nephew, Brian Hutcherson, and his wife, Amy, and their twin daughters, Kate and Maggie, of Fishersville, VA; her niece, Karen Douglas, and her husband, Scott, of Christiansburg, VA; her brother, Nelson Sprouse, and his wife, Helen of Spring City TN; her niece Robin Hayslett of Spring City, TN and her family; her niece, Terry Gortler of Chesterfield, VA and her family; and her nephew Mason Thomas of Waynesboro, VA and his family.
She was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Ivy, Virginia, where her faith and devotion were at the center of her life. Over the years, she served in nearly every role possible, from the vestry to the altar guild, and was always willing to lend a hand-whether that meant organizing, cleaning, or simply offering encouragement. The church was a special place in her heart, and through her service, she built many lasting friendships that became family. She especially loved being part of the church yard sales, where fellowship and community spirit came alive, and she was proud to see the parish hall grow with the addition that supported gatherings, meals, and the church family she held so dear.
Her working life began at Tillman's in the shoe department before she moved on to General Electric, where she dedicated 35 years to the customer service department and served as activities director until her retirement in 2001. She coordinated many trips for the GE Activity Club, with her favorite trips including Reading, Pennsylvania; the circus; Baltimore Orioles games; Virginia Beach; Water Country; Kings Dominion; Atlantic City (though she never gambled); and even NASCAR races. While still at GE, she also worked in every position at Brownsville Market, which was then owned by Jeff, for 16 years until he sold the business in 2008.
She was a selfless caretaker, always putting others before herself. Over the years, she devoted time and love to caring for her mother, mother-in-law, Sonny, Lucille, Bessie, Bernice, Audrey, and Miz.
Family time was her greatest joy, and some of her fondest memories were made at the Outer Banks. She looked forward to stopping at Pierce's Pitt Bar-B-Que on the way down and back, eating at the local Tale of the Whale, sitting on the porch listening to the ocean and counting the cars, and watching the fireworks on the Fourth of July. For 33 years, she and Karen shared a beach week tradition for Memorial Day that became a highlight of each summer. She loved shopping-whether on QVC, at TJ Maxx, or Belk-and she especially loved shopping for her family. At Christmastime, there was no limit to her generosity, as she delighted in making the holiday magical with her thoughtful gifts.
She was known for her homestyle, country cooking, preparing three meals a day, and always making sure anyone who visited left with a full belly. In her retirement years, she cherished time with her grandchildren, whether it was taking them to or picking them up from appointments or sports practices. Most notably, she picked Jordan up from school, where she would always wait in the car line an hour early just to be on time. One year, they went to Subway and Chiles Peach Orchard for ice cream after every pickup. She also lovingly cared for her son and daughter-in-law's home by cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, and even ironing-acts of service that spoke to her giving spirit.
She remained healthy and active until suffering a stroke in May. After time in the hospital and at rehab, she was blessed to spend her final months at home.
A special thank you to her caregivers, Barbara Browning, Lucille Jones, Shannon Naylor, Gloria Pritchett, Susan Proffitt, and Linda Weeks, for their support, compassion, and care. We also extend our gratitude to everyone who visited her, especially her church friends and family. Lastly, she was blessed to have Jordan faithfully overseeing her care at home-arranging caregiver support, coordinating nurse and therapy visits, and devotedly making sure her comfort and well-being were properly attended to several times each day.
She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and always putting her family and friends before herself. Though we will miss Nancy every single day, we find comfort in knowing that she will live on through the love she gave us, the laughter we shared, and the memories we hold close. She is forever loved, forever remembered.
Instead of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church at P.O. Box 351, Ivy, Virginia 22945.
Services will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, located at 4708 Dick Woods Road, Charlottesville, Virginia. The Rev. Anthony Andres and The Venerable Brian Hutcherson will officiate. Following the service will be a graveside burial.
