Robert Eugene "Sonny" Oliphant, 54, of Barboursville, Virginia, departed this life on Thursday, August 16, 2018, at his home. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, he was the son of the late Calvin Eugene Cates and Barbara and Wayne Clark of Crozet, Virginia. Sonny was preceded in death by his grandparents, R.P. and Lois Cates; grandmother, Blanche Graves; his uncles, Alfred and Bob Graves; his aunt, Jo Graves; and his cousin, Bill Graves. Sonny leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Doris "D.V." Oliphant; their children, sons, Cory Austin Oliphant and fiancee, Brittnee Nichols, and Nicholas James "Nick" Oliphant and daughter, Mikayla Grace Oliphant; his brothers, Matthew Cates and wife, Tonya, and Marvin Cates and wife, Roxanne; sisters, Donna Cagle, Darlene Cates, and Debbie Matthews and husband, Jimmy, of Texas and their families; stepmother, Linda "Nanny" Cates; and special cousins, Penny WIlliams and husband, Lewis, Willie Lohr and daughters, Miranda and Hayley Lohr, and Jonathan "J.T." Lohr and fiancee, Amanda and their family. Sonny will be greatly missed by his cat, Ozzie and his dogs, Mollie and Bing. Sonny had a passion for cooking that spanned many years from The Gallerie in Crozet, Va., Boars Head Inn, Bull Alley, Horsefeathers in Orange, The Coppermine @ Wintergreen, Oregano Joe's, Farmington Country Club, to UVA Healthsouth for the last 12 years. Sonny also owned and operated China Moon in Scottsville from 2004-2006. Sonny loved spending time with his family going out to eat, going to concerts, going bowling or just cooking and staying home. Sonny loved his pets, sitting on the porch, drinking coffee, drawing, listening to music, fishing, and watching T.V. Crime dramas, he loved the Beach and traveling. Canada was our next adventure !!! Daddy, this is not goodbye, It's Just For Now. We Love You & Miss You, Forever in Our Hearts, Love, Mom, Cory, Nick & Mikayla.. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Eden Ministries, 2900 Merrie Meadows Lane, Keswick, Virginia (Stony Point), with Pastor Edgar Green officiating. Sonny has been entrusted to Teague Funeral Home, Charlottesville, Virginia.
