Randolph Rivinus Obituary
Randolph Phelps Rivinus
December 10, 1946 - May 10, 2025
Born in Roanoke, Va., on December 10, 1946 – Died May 10, 2025, Keswick, Va.
Randy passed from this world, leaving those who loved him, and whom he loved with a deep sadness, but with hearts filled with the love he shared and all that he was in life.
Randy, the quintessential Engineer, the man filled with generosity and kindness for all others, and deep love and caring for his devoted wife, Susan, of 49 years. He loved life and traveling the world, photographing the magnificence of this country and other nations.
And with these passions, he loved and supported his Alma Matre, Virginia Tech. Graduating from "Tech" in 1969, as a Civil Engineer, his entire professional career stemmed from this education. As his career progressed as a principal in various companies in Georgia and continuing projects in Virginia, he also came to love mentoring young and upcoming engineers.
He and Susan would attend almost ALL the football games at Tech, rain or shine, and cheered on their team.
Randy always "gave back" and did so with a great sense of community and generosity, not to forget his adoring sense of humor, his gift of joke telling, and his rich smile. His family and friends always felt his warmth and his twinkle in his smile.
Among his most cherished commitments in the engineering community was his membership in the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, and also at Tech, the Committee of 100 in Engineering, plus his various Board positions at Tech over the decades.
Randy leaves his beautiful and loving wife, Susan, a son, Sean Rivinus, and his wife, Marlene of Gastonia, N.C., and three sisters, Diane Rivinus of Falls Church, Va., Jennette Vann of Winston-Salem, N.C., her husband Luther Vann, and Ellen, and her husband Samuel Wheeler of Devon, Pa.
With profound gratitude and heartfelt thanks to Hospice of the Piedmont, especially nurse Chris, UVA Oncology, Dr. John Densmore, and P.A. Samantha Lively, and the Martha Jefferson, Sentara Team.
