Rhiannon Campbell Obituary

In Memoriam

Rhiannon Southwick Campbell

1993-2008

Funeral Blues:

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Silence the pianos and with muffled drum, Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let the aeroplanes circle moaning overhead, Scribbling on the sky the message She is Dead, Put Crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policeman wear black cotton gloves.

She was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one, Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun, Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods; For nothing now can ever come to any good.

- W.H. Auden

On Monday, September 1, 2008, Rhiannon Southwick Campbell's too brief life ended. She was born 15 years ago, in London, and has lived in Scottsville, Virginia, since 2004.

She is survived by her parents, Jim and Jennifer Campbell of Scottsville; her beloved brother, Niall, also of Scottsville; her grandparents, Pam Tompkins of Scottsville, Charles Tompkins of Washington, Virginia, and James M. Campbell II of Waterloo Ontario; her aunts and uncles, Stephanie and Scott Senn of Kinards, South Carolina, Anne and Udo Hortian of Waterloo Ontario, Helen and Kranti Toraskar of Honk Kong; her cousins, Madeline Senn of Kinards, Tara Parker of Waterloo, Adam Hortian of Waterloo, Nikhil Toraskar of Hong Kong, Meera Toraskar of Hong Kong, and Mr. and Mrs. Chetan Toraskar of Las Vegas, Nevada. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Catherine Campbell.

Rhiannon enjoyed numerous hobbies and interests including riding her beloved horses, Belle and Snickers, where she participated in horse shows, earning various ribbons; she was an avid lover of animals and leaves behind a beloved dog named King; she consistently achieved high academics by being on the Honor Roll; she loved music and was a voracious reader; she had love of and gift for photography; and she was a staunch environmentalist.

Her funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Christ Church Episcopal in Glendower. Interment will follow immediately after at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2008, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested for the Days End Farm Horse Rescue (www.defhr.org), Gallastar Equine Center, or the Piedmont Environmental Council (www.pecva.org).

Happy Birthday, Rhiannon. Posted this on your birthday, but I guess never got approved. Miss you always.

The world could use your kindness today
and the days to follow.
It should take notes on your
compassion and wits.
Learn that your smile
could light up more than a room
but the depths of the most disheartened soul.
That your gift of understanding
was ever-flowing
and washed upon the most rocky shores — breaking it down to sand
and refreshed hope.
But most importantly,
that the way you love can still be felt
in every breath,
in every step,
in every moment we hold dear.
Rhiannon, you are an eternal flame,
our light that will never go out.

September 1, 2021

The clocks may have stopped
but the love has not.
I refuse to believe in a frozen time,
untouchable and packed away.
You are not defined by the moment you left
as that was never the case at all.
You are still here in
sunny days and rainbows,
in moments of reflection and
in wonder of who you would be today.
Days grow distant, but memories do not.
I still hold them close, as if I could offer them
to the world;
recite them detail by detail with
eyes closed and caught up where
we still exist together.
Mea papilio,
may your wings carry you
to countless spaces.

----------------------------

Love to you and yours, always.

June 22, 2021

To make up for being late in years past, I thought I would tell you Happy Birthday a few days early. Miss you always, sweet girl.
—————————————-

Stevie Nicks had no idea
she would be writing about you,
the eternal force that lingers when
we need it the most.
It’s more than a tune
that carries a catchy chorus.
It’s the momentary respite,
the ode to an adventurous spirit,
your reminder that
we still miss you and need to
hear your name.

I know you’re out there where
the hills are wide and
the sun always shines.
Where there’s hoof prints
chasing horizons.
I can feel you in the soft breezes,
in the rays that warm
a never-mended heart.

For now we carry a song,
your memory, this grief
in our love and hope it finds you
in the moments our worlds collide.

“For you, Rhiannon, I would fight, I would fight the world.”

It's a little late, but better late than never. Rest easy, sweet girl. Love to you and your family always!

----------------------------------

I still find myself
tracing the stars,
looking for your name
in hopes you orbit the spaces
I wish you still occupied.
I asked for a sign and
you gave me a swallowtail
in a subtle September breeze.
I hate that all I could offer
was a "thank you" and a
half-smile smeared with grief.
Twelve years can feel like yesterday
and yesterday still pulls and tugs;
here I am stretching myself
through the universe,
trying to bring you home:
a selfish act birthed from the
many nights of longing, the desire
to let you know I miss you more than
the stars could ever write.

2018 and I still think about you and your family all the time. I still wonder who you'd be today and where you'd be exploring next. Back in 2009, I bought a butterfly necklace in honor of you. It has iridescent wings and a crystal abdomen. I still wear it from time to time, especially on those days I miss you the most. Miss you, beautiful girl. You will never be forgotten.

"I had a Red-spotted Purple
stop by this morning
and linger on the porch
long enough for me to believe
it was you.
I still have the necklace,
the butterfly with
iridescent wings
and a crystal abdomen.
I wear it from time to time,
fidget and rub my fingers
on the edges,
hoping it worked like
a magic lamp and you would appear again.
Now I find myself in the garden,
hands deep in the dirt
planting fennel and
lavender lupines
hoping you'll come back,
if only for a moment."

Here it is years later rhiannon and i weren't the greatest of friends but she was a good person to be around from gym class to bus rides we always sat across from one another and would have small talk. She was a well rounded individual and to this day i still think of her and wonder, may her soul rest in peace and god be with her family forever because no matter how long its been its a forever journey of pain without her in others lives many people love her and will contiune to love her i pray for those who are still here and missing her terribly. So it's been a month now, I'm a little late on signing this.
Rhiannon was a very close friend of mine. I've known her since 7th grade. Rhiannon could always make anyone smile or laugh no matter how bad their day was going. She had a wonderful gift of love for all. I can't imagine the pain and loss that you are feeling right now and I am just so very sorry. You are in my prayers and my thoughts, always.

Riannon was such a sweet bright person. The school hallways seem not as bright with her not walking in them. She was soo smart. I miss not seeing her at school, and on the bus. I just lost my Granny, and it is sooo hard to deal with both of these losses at the same time. I miss you both soo much. RIP Rhiannon and my Granny.
