Rick Morris Obituary

Rick L. Morris

October 2, 1958 - October 25, 2021

Ricky Leon Morris, 63, of Earlysville, Virginia, affectionately known as Rick, Big Rick, and Dad, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 25, 2021, surrounded by his loving family at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Rick was born on October 2, 1958, son of the late Ernest Morris and Dorothy Collier Morris. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Larry J. Morris.

Rick is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Gale Garrison Morris; children, Ricky L. Morris, II (Ashleigh), LaDawn R. Herndon (Charlie), Ernest M. Morris (Janey), Tyler B. Morris, Laura M. Morris, Leslie M. Morris, and Luke G. Morris; grandchildren who affectionately called him "Grampy", SaraBeth P. Morris, Ricky L. "Tripp" Morris III, Lincoln J. Herndon, and Theodore J. Herndon; brothers, Roger W. Morris (Barbara) and Nelson R. Morris (Allison); and many other loving family members and friends, including his dog, River.

Rick was a member of the Nortonsville Church of God for 63 years and had a servant's heart which led him to minister in many capacities. He was a talented musician who could hit the lowest bass notes and could sing a mean tenor. He was a lifelong Albemarle High School Marching Patriot. Rick was previously employed by Brady-Bushey Ford with over 32 years of service. He was currently employed as the Director of Fleet and Facilities Management with the County of Greene.

Big Rick had a genuine love for his family and its heritage. He took pride in large family gatherings, the abundance of fellowship, and reaping the benefits of our family's southern hospitality.

He loved to play pickleball, cornhole, ping pong, softball and was proud to be a member of the Nortonsville Church of God's championship softball team.

Dad loved visiting the Outer Banks with his family where he spent many hours metal detecting, finding treasures, and building superior sandcastles that stopped people in their tracks.

Rick never met a stranger. He was always wearing a smile, sometimes a mischievous grin, and had an uncanny sense of humor that lit up the room and led to laughter and many memories.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. William Bigelow, nurses, Jackie, T.J., Samantha, Mimi, Jessica L., Mariah, Sarah, Kris, and the staff of 4South.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Thursday, October 28, 2021, at Nortonsville Church of God, 1505 Simmons Gap Road Dyke, VA 22935.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2021, at Nortonsville Church of God with Pastors Greg Payne and David Allison officiating. Interment will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery.

An online guestbook is available at www.ryanfuneral.com.

Ryan Funeral Home of Ruckersville is in charge of arrangements.

Gale - I was saddened to learn of Ricks passing, I saw the notice on line. I always looked forward to seeing you both around the first of the year and sorta getting an update on your kids. Reading Ricks info. I learned things, such as his singing talents, who'd of thought? You both were always nice to work with. Wishing you comfort and the best.

Rick was always someone I could trust to advise me of what to do about any vehicle that I or my family owned. When he left the ford company, I didn't have anybody to turn to for recommendations. I am so sorry for your loss.

I had the pleasure of knowing Rick through the AHS Band Boosters. Rick was always there when he was needed with his little grin on his face. Never a dull moment when he was around and if you were having a bad day...it would not take Rick long to put a smile on your face. LaDawn and my younger daughter Jamie were in band together and Best Friends. LaDawn Introduced Jamie to Nortonsville Church of God. What a blessing that was. When Luke came along they needed childcare for him 1-2 days a week and I kept Luke and the Morris' were an extended for for us. Rick, my husband Scott and I chaperones whenever help was needed. Both of our children grew out of High School but Rick had one child after another in band for over 20 years and Rick served on the Band Booster board, chaperone, fix it man and what ever was needed. As others have said he was the 1st to arrive and the last to leave and made sure the job was done right. He was one of those friends that would help you when needed and never complain. I will miss your jokes and that big smile but I will see you again. To Gale and family my heart breaks for you. When the load gets hard let me know if I can help. Praying for peace and comfort for the family and friends.

I feel so fortunate to have known Ricky Morris. After high school we didn’t see much of each other, but I had the great honor of working with him on our 40th high school reunion.Ricky was such a positive light and so willing to jump in and help with anything. He was one of those rare people who brought nothing but good to every interaction. How lucky we were to know him. My sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathies go to Gail and their children and grandchildren. He was a special person and he will be missed by all who knew him.

I have known Ricky since I first moved here in 1969. I had such admiration for his musical talents. He was a wonderful friend and one of only a few people that remembered to call me ‘Jan’ instead of my sister’s name! The last time I saw him was at the yard sale at the church. He’s leaving many people who loved him. But with assurance that he is in heaven and we’ll see him again.

Big Rick was always more like an uncle to me than a cousin. My Dad considered him a brother and Little Ricky and I being the same age it seemed like one of us was with the others family every weekend. It’s hard to believe you’re gone and we will all miss seeing you. Lori always told me you were one of her favorite of my kinfolk. I have no doubt you’re in a better place with many of our family who went on before. I hope you and Dad get a ton of fishing done in heaven and I’m sure he’s shown you all the good spots by now.
We love all y’all.

I have so much to say about this wonderful person. Among the best memories of the countless joyful hours I spent with Rick is this one: He was always the first person to arrive at Albemarle on fruit delivery morning. Here's why this is so significant.
1. Rick was a man of his word. When he said he was going to be somewhere, he showed up. Usually before sunrise.
2. Rick was a true friend to me. It was unthinkable to him that I would be there at 5:30am waiting for help. The opposite was always true. Rick (and Donna of course) were always there waiting for me. I should have just given Rick the key.
3. Rick had endless generosity for the kids we served. Not just his kids, either. He cared about everybody's kid. If a job needed doing, or a thing needed fixing, building, putting together or taking apart, Rick was in the middle of it.
4. Rick always brought whichever of his children was in the band at the time with him to help unload. He was a father who taught by example and expected his brood to follow his lead. They did and do.
5. For some reason Rick was always in a ridiculously good mood at 5:30 am. He would gently move me out of the way so he could put the rollers together correctly, and then do more lifting that any three of us combined. This confused me because we are the same age and he didn't seem to be calcifying at the same rate.
6. Rick was a finisher. He stayed until the job was done and all the debris was cleaned up, put away or dismantled. First one there, last one to leave.
7. Rick approached everything he did with the AHS Band in this same way. He chaperoned countless band trips, Marching Band trips, pool parties, Jazz Band Dances. My son requested Rick for his chaperone on every trip. I asked him why. "He's Awesome" was his answer. Rick led, co-led, and served our Booster group in a million ways for as far back as I care to remember.
I will always be in your debt, Rick. You were there whenever we needed you, and you made a very special kind of difference in my life and the lives of generations of Albemarle Band students. I am so proud to call you my friend.
