John Marshall Obituary

John "Jack" Marshall

Feb 10, 1941 - Feb 18, 2026

John (Jack) Fordyce Marshall died at home in Crozet, on Wednesday February 18, at the age of 85. He was the only son of John E. Marshall and Madaline Morris Marshall. He is survived by his wife, Cri Kars-Marshall.

Born on February 10, 1941, in Morgantown, W. Va., Jack lived at least one year in 15 different places--but the only place he called his "hometown" was Charlottesville, Va., where he and his wife, Cri, bought their Free Union home in 1988.

Jack spent two high school years at the Browne and Nichols School in Cambridge, Mass., an experience he found life-changing. He then earned a B.A. degree from Baldwin-Wallace College, an M.A. from Pennsylvania State College, and a Ph.D. in Cultural and Applied Anthropology from the University of Hawaii and the East West Center.

Jack found deep meaning in his work as an anthropologist. His two-year stay in an Indian village as a recipient of the Fulbright Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship changed his view of the world. He always wished for every American to have a chance to live in a developing country for an extended time and appreciate how lucky we are here.

Jack worked as a professor of anthropology and public health at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and later at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He also had a distinguished career as a director of social science research in family planning for the United Nations World Health Organization.

He loved his work for international organizations such as WHO, UNFPA, USAID, IPPF, and Dutch Governmental organizations focusing on maternal and child health and family planning.

Upon moving to Albemarle County in 1988, Jack applied his experience to local challenges. He founded Advocates for a Sustainable Albemarle Population, served as the chair of the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority, and was an active board member with Citizens for Albemarle, the Ivy Creek Foundation, the Moormans Scenic River Advisory Board, the Council on Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, and Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge.

Jack's first job at age 7 as a boy soprano laid the ground work for his love for music, which he continued by singing with the Jeffersonland Barbershop Chorus. He sang in several barbershop quartets. Valentine's day was his favorite day of the year, when, from dawn to dusk, he could perform singing-Valentines with his quartet to make people happy.

Jack had other passions as well. He followed his father's enthusiasm for antique cars, working on his father's 1918 Model T Ford, "Tizzy", later accompanied by "Jezebel", the 1911 red Model-T Ford. He loved the planning and reconstruction of a log cabin in Peavine Hollow, where many friends came to celebrate Thanksgiving, New Year's Day, and morel mushroom hunts. Last but not least, his passion for learning about and collecting ethnic art nourished his anthropological curiosity and aesthetic side.

Jack was very conscious of the fact that he had an improbable and impossibly lucky life.

His interment will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Panorama Farms Natural Burial, 3550 Reas Ford Lane, Earlysville. https://www.panoramaburial.com/

A Celebration of Life will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Camp Albemarle, 1675 4-H Way, off Free Union Road, Charlottesville. https://campalbemarleva.org/

Please join us for either or both of these events.

Please note: because Panorama Farm is a green burial cemetery, only cut flowers may be put on the grave, and guests should be mindful there is uneven and possibly muddy ground to navigate on the farm.

At Camp Albemarle the gathering will be indoors, and the building has limited-mobility access.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Planned Parenthood, Piedmont Environmental Council, or the Jeffersonland Chorus, 1223 W Main Street, Charlottesville, Va.
