Robert Allen Obituary

Robert Emmet Allen, a man of remarkable spirit and diverse accomplishments, has left a legacy that will be remembered by many. Born in New Orleans on August 1, 1944, Robert's journey through life was as vibrant and varied as the seasons. His early years were shaped by the loving guidance of his parents, Ernest and Mary Scammell Allen. Robert's life was a tapestry of rich experiences and passions. As a world-class sportsman, he embraced the thrill of competition and the joy of physical endeavor. His adventurous spirit led him to traverse six continents and the Arctic, each journey imbuing him with a deeper appreciation for the planet's diverse cultures, landscapes, flora, and fauna.

Robert's commitment to preservation was evident in his work as an environmental and architectural conservator. His hands, as skilled in the delicate care of a garden as they were steady at the helm of a plane, worked tirelessly to maintain the beauty and integrity of our world's natural and constructed marvels. His service as a US Navy pilot spoke of his courage and dedication to his country, a period of his life where he soared above clouds and faced challenges with unwavering resolve.

An alumnus of the University of Virginia, Robert's intellectual pursuits were as fervent as his physical ones. His love for learning was a constant companion throughout his life, guiding his steps and enriching his conversations. In the quiet moments, one could find Robert in his gardens on Highbrighton Farm, a place of solace and growth, where he cultivated not just earth and plants, but ideas and dreams.

Robert's passion for automobiles was not just a hobby but a reflection of his character—meticulous, resilient, and always moving forward. His work in restoring racecars was a blend of art and engineering, a pursuit that required patience, precision, and a deep respect for the craft.

As a member of the International Order of Saint Hubertus, Robert leaves a legacy of stewardship and passion for the outdoors, embodying the spirit of Saint Hubertus and leaving an indelible mark on the sporting community he cherished.

A visionary in the world of business consulting, Robert leaves behind a legacy of innovation and leadership. As the Managing Director of Redding Consultants, a firm he co-founded with his wife Jeri Atherton in 1982, Robert demonstrated a remarkable ability to navigate and shape the corporate landscape. His expertise and strategic guidance were sought after by numerous prestigious companies, including AT&T, Mazda, and Liz Claibourne, to name a few. Robert's tenure on the boards of public companies such as EDO, J. Roberts and Son, Pioneer, and BIC underscored his reputation as a trusted advisor capable of offering deep insights into complex challenges. Known for his global perspective, Robert's contributions extended beyond the boardroom, influencing industry standards and practices. His innovative approach and dedication to excellence will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

In his personal life, Robert was a beloved husband, stepfather, grandfather, brother, and uncle. His family was the cornerstone of his world, and he leaves behind a loving wife, Joan, two stepsons Robert Atherton (Eugenie) and Jeffrey Sterling (Jeanne), and ten grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of kindness, strength, and curiosity. His brother John Allen (Carol) remains a testament to the enduring bond of siblings.

Though Robert is predeceased by his wife Jeri Lynn Allen and his treasured sister Elizabeth Austin (Robert), his memory will continue to be a beacon of inspiration for all who knew him. His life, so beautifully lived, serves as a reminder to us all to embrace our passions, protect our world, and cherish our loved ones. Robert Emmet Allen's story is one of a life well-lived, and though he has set sail on his final voyage, the ripples of his existence will be felt for generations to come.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Highbrighton Farm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any remembrances be made to Feeding Greene – The Food Pantry of Greene County, 81 Main Street, Stanardsville, VA 22973.

Robert was an outstanding man as well said in his obituary. I had many wonderful shoots with Robert at Highbrighton Farm. A bit of fabric has been removed from our cloth but I am better for known Robert.
