Samuel Coy "Mac" Sloan

Samuel Sloan Obituary

Samuel Coy "Mac" Sloan returned home to Jesus on Thursday, December 6, 2007.

Mac was born on June 8, 1933, in Ferrum, Virginia, the son of the late Millard and Berta Sloan. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Barbara Wilkerson Sloan; five brothers, Burford, Birchel, Virgil, Millard and Alfred Sloan; and by a sister, Verta Perdue.

He is survived by two sons, Robert Dale Sloan and David Coy Sloan and his wife, Kim; and three granddaughters, Chessie, MacKenzie and Langley, whom he loved dearly. Mac is also survived by his sisters, Delphia (Dale) Carroll, Nell Meade and Jessie Brown; a brother, Berkley "Buck" Sloan; and by his beloved friend, Addie Smith, and her children, Sharon, Karen, Eddie and Debbie and by Lauren and Amymah (Mi Mi). Also left to cherish his memory are his longtime traveling companions, Dolly and Richard Garrison and Sonny and Ginny Payne.

Mac was a 30 year retired veteran of the Charlottesville Police Department and founder of Sloans Restaurant in 1983. He was a proud graduate of The Miller School and a longtime member of Elk's Lodge No. 389 and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a founding member and coach of area Little League football, a member of Cherry Avenue Christian Church and a passionate fan of UVA football and the Washington Redskins. Mac will always be remembered for his ability to create laughter wherever he went and for his large, caring heart. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The family will welcome friends from 3 until 5 p.m. Sunday, December 9, 2007, at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 10, 2007, at First Baptist Church, 735 Park Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad, PO Box 160, Charlottesville, VA 22902, The Fraternal Order of Police, 974 Michie Tavern Lane, Charlottesville, VA 22902 or the Kids Lift Foundation (Toy Lift), Post Office Box 6762, Charlottesville, VA 22906.

I'm really sorry for your loss. Riding to practice at Scott stadium one day in Dale's car I remember getting "pulled over" by a police car only to hear a friendly voice and see a father pat his son on the back. Could this have been him?

Was truly sorry to hear of your loss and want you to know my thoughts and prayers are with you both and your family at this tragic time. I remember long ago you both reached out to me when my father passed and helped me. I can only hope this helps you in some small way. David and Dale and all of Sloane family- I just returned to town and learned of the tragic death of Mac. I learned to know him countless years ago and have seldom met a man who had so many friends, mainly because he was so full of life himself. He was a good listener at times but told a good story too. We will all miss him and you will especially, but know that he lives on in spirit. He lived his life fully and that is a great blessing.

To Dale, David and The Sloan Family:

I am very sorry to learn of this tragic loss.

When the Sloans moved to Kenwood, his squad car served as the neighborhood's orginal "traffic calming" measure.

As a police officer or a host, he was always considered one of the good guys.

You were fortunate to have him so present in your lives.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
