Stephen "Timmy" Smith

1952 - 2022

Stephen Bruce Smith was born on the 29th of February in the Leap Year of 1952, the second son of Margaret and Ed Smith. His brother Lan nicknamed him “Timmy� for his newborn likeness to the Golden Book character “Timmy the Field Mouse�, a moniker that stuck for the next seventy years.

Timmy’s youth in Ivy, Virginia, was spent exploring the woods and drinking from the creek that ran through his parent’s property. The former strengthened him to enjoy the array of foods he maintained on the dash of his well-worn trucks without ill-effect.

His ardor of horses commanded that barns figured into his professional life. He built many stalwart structures that now stand as memorials. Moving away from buildings he shifted his focus to creating furniture leaving behind a gorgeous legacy of rustic pieces, elegant in their straightforward, minimalist bearing. If all the Timmy Smith tables were placed end to end a thousand friends would be seated together in celebration, as would be his wish.

Timmy’s magnanimous personality defied encapsulation. No one escaped his humor, or his generosity, it touched everyone, most especially the love of his life, Victoria Godfrey. They were married in November of 2013. Together they created a vibrant home frequented by their family of friends.

Timmy is survived by his wife, Victoria; children, Timothy Reid Smith, and Mary Stamps Beebe and husband, Ashton, and their mother, Lois White Cole and her husband, Taylor Cole; grandchildren, Hayden, Hilah, and Olivia; and brother, Lan Smith.

Memorial contributions to be made to the donors preferred charity in Timmy’s honor and to remember to vote.

A graveside service was held Saturday, August 13, 2022, 4 p.m. at Tim and Victoria’s residence. A gathering of family and friends was held after the service at the residence.
