Thomas Mackey Obituary
Thomas "Tom" Benjamin Mackey
June 10, 1948 - March 16, 2025
Tom Mackey, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully in his Naples, Florida home on March 16, 2025. Tom was born June 10, 1948, in Somerville, MA - the eldest son of Irish parents, John and Rita Mackey - and brother to siblings Carol, John and Paul. Excelling academically through his early years, Tom graduated from Northeastern University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. He went on to study Business and Public Administration at Cornell University, where he completed his Master of Business Administration in 1973.
Tom relocated to San Diego, California to start his career in hospital administration with the University of California Medical Center as the Associate Director of Hospitals and Clinics, before leaving for Tenet Healthcare in multiple roles over 17 years. Ultimately, as President & COO of Tenet, he dedicated his professional life to hospital administration with the goal of helping people receive the best possible care. He developed programs which gave medical professionals the resources and support to save and improve the health of patients.
Tom became a loving father to daughter, Caroline, in 1995. A devoted father, he took great pride in watching Caroline grow and develop her love of riding horses. Together, they enjoyed swimming, watching science fiction films, and discussing history and current events. He also competed in marathons and enjoyed skiing.
After retiring in 2002, Tom moved to Charlottesville, Virginia where he was able to continue to watch Caroline ride, while also enjoying his lifelong hobbies: golf, history, wine, cooking, food and travel. He met his beloved wife, Margaret "Meg" (nee Pechilio) in 2011, and the two were married on their Virginia Farm in 2012. Tom became a second father to Meg's boys - Nicholas, Robert and Tony.
Tom and Meg enjoyed precious time with family and friends in Falmouth on Cape Cod, Massachusetts during summers. He cherished serving as 'captain' and boating with family on Buzzards Bay in Cape Cod, while also playing golf at Woods Hole and singing around the piano with brother Paul playing the tunes. In the winters, he would enjoy time with friends by the water and in nature in Naples, FL. His love of nature was evident in his appreciation for flowers, flowering trees, sunrises, sunsets, and the stars - simple, yet profound joys, that enriched his life and those he loved.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; his daughter, Caroline of Warren, NJ; his stepsons, Nicholas, Robert and Tony of Charlottesville, VA; his sister, Carol (nee Pirri) and brother-in-law Sam, of Londonderry, NH; and his brothers, John (Diane) of San Diego, CA, and Paul (Sue) of Falmouth, MA; along with nephews, nieces and many friends.
A celebration of life will be held on July 1, 2025, at Woods Hole Golf Club in Woods Hole, Massachusetts (130 Quisset Avenue) from 12 to 2 p.m. for family and friends to gather in remembrance of Tom's fulfilling and rewarding life.
Tom will be remembered for his warmth, intellect, love of family and friends, and appreciation for life's finest moments. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Tom to The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank or to First Tee of Naples/Collier.
