MACKEY, Winnie C. Of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, died peacefully in Falmouth, on January 14, at the age of 90. Winnie Crane was born on March 7, 1935, in Hartford, Connecticut. She attended Ethel Walker School and Smith College, graduating in 1957, and went on to work as a neurosurgical technician at Massachusetts General Hospital. While in Boston, she met her future husband and inseparable companion of 58 years, William "Bill" Mackey. Married on April 22, 1961, Winnie and Bill lived in Bern, Switzerland, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Washington D.C. and Brooklyn Heights, New York, before settling outside of Boston and raising their three children: Abby, Tim, and Cam. Winnie's life took an unexpected turn in 1986 with the tragic loss of her daughter, Abby, then 21 years old, from a climbing accident in Wyoming. Her grief turned to resolve that she and those around her would live their lives to the absolute fullest, and she exhibited incredible strength and resilience in moving forward with her life. Winnie and Bill became avid travelers and supporters of wildlife and environmental causes for the remainder of their lives. Winnie's relationship with Woods Hole began at the age of three and continued through her final days. As an adult, she particularly enjoyed tennis, paddle, and golf, and the connections and friendships that grew out of them. In later years, Winnie was strongly committed to tutoring elementary school children in Teaticket, pursued her lifelong interest in painting and drawing and participated in the Woods Hole Women's Club. Winnie was gregarious and thrived on contributing to her community. Winnie was predeceased by her husband, Bill; her daughter, Abby; and her sister, Davis Greene. She is survived by her sons: William T. "Tim" Mackey (married to Carol Lee Rawn) and Cameron K. Mackey (married to Susana Mackey); and her six grandchildren: Brita, Anna, William, Colin, Logan, and Hunter. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren. Winnie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, known for her boundless reserve of positive energy, sweetness, and silly humor. She was unpretentious and down to earth. A Celebration of her Life will be held during the summer on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Woods Hole Women's Club Scholarship Fund or the 300 Committee Land Trust. For online guestbook and condolences, please visit
