John Cahoon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cartwright Funeral Home - Randolph on Jan. 29, 2026.
John B. Cahoon, of Randolph, formerly of Falmouth, a man of profound kindness and wisdom, passed away peacefully at home on January 25, 2026. Born on February 13, 1940, in Falmouth, he was the cherished son of the late George and Pauline (Silvia) Cahoon. John's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, as he was the devoted husband of the late Jane C. (Corrigan) Cahoon and a loving father, brother, and grandfather.

John grew up in Falmouth, where he attended Falmouth High School, laying the groundwork for a lifetime of learning and achievement. His passion for sports was evident early on, and he carried that passion to the College of the Holy Cross, where he was an esteemed member of the football team. His academic journey continued at Babson College, where he not only excelled in basketball but also set a lasting record for the most rebounds in a single season.

Following his educational pursuits, John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, a time that highlighted his patriotism and dedication. After his service, he embarked on a career at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. His work there took him across the globe, allowing him to travel the world. John was a respected member of the Teamsters Local 25 for half a century, retiring as the Shop Steward, a role in which he was known for his fair and wise leadership.

Beyond his professional life, John was deeply involved in his community. He held the position of Treasurer for the Randolph Amvets Post 51, where his financial acumen and dedication to veterans were greatly appreciated. A passionate sports fan, he lived for the thrill of cheering on his beloved Boston sports teams. His interests also extended to golf and horse racing, pursuits that he enjoyed for their camaraderie and excitement.

Most of all, John was a family man. He was a loving father to his daughter Jill Pitts and her husband Michael of Braintree, and his late daughter Erin Cahoon. He was the devoted brother of Michael Cahoon of Falmouth. John's role as Grampy to Olivia and Michael Pitts was one he cherished above all. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he devoted himself to their happiness and well-being.

John's legacy is one of love, kindness, and wisdom. His warm presence will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation period on Thursday, February 5th, from 9:30 – 11:30 AM in the Cartwright Funeral Home, 419 No. Main St. (RT. 28), Randolph. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:30 AM in the Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to a Veteran's charity of your choice.

I knew John from the start of my involvement with Amvets, back around '99.
Marched together, involved in many committees with him along with just the standard biz of the Post.
He was one of the last of a certain "old guard" to still be with us.
May he Rest in Peace. ^+^

John was my best friend. I will miss him forever. He was there in one second to help solve problems , not only for the Amvets Post, but for anyone that needed advice. He was very knowledgeable about any subject that you might ask him about. I will miss his kindness and his willingness to listen. He was a very proud and private man. He will be forever etched in my heart and mind. May John rest in Peace . Always Forever, my best Friend. Joni Curtin
