Martin Schmidt Obituary
AGE: 85 • Montville
Martin H. Schmidt, Jr., of Montville, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home on Lake Valhalla, Monday, July 29, 2013. He was 85 years old. Born in Bronx, NY, Martin married the late Barbara (Siver) in 1954 and moved to Lake Valhalla in 1958 where they raised four children. A native New Yorker, Martin received a BA from Manhattan College in 1951 and also studied at the US Merchant Marine Academy, Columbia Graduate School of Industrial Engineering and New York University Graduate School of Business. Mr. Schmidt's storied career began with management positions at International Projector Corp, Schering Plough and Arthur Anderson. He joined Squibb Corporation in 1965 as Director Physical Distribution and Inventory Control, with succeeding assignments as VP Management Information; VP Administration; President, Squibb Pacific & Italy; simultaneously President & CEO of Charles of the Ritz and Life Savers; Group VP of Squibb Corporation; Senior Consultant to the office of the Chairman; President of Convatec Division; Chancellor of Squibb College. Mr. Schmidt was elected to the Board of Directors of Squibb Corporation in 1977 and served until 1984. Martin retired from Squibb Corporation in 1989. Passionate about giving back to his community, Martin served numerous organizations; the Knights of Columbus (58 yrs), Board of Trustees Manhattan College (15yrs, 5 as Chairman), Easter Seals, March of Dimes, and Montville Preservation Society. He founded the charitable BJ Foundation in 1986 providing opportunities to underprivileged children.
Martin was predeceased by his wife, Barbara in 2006. Surviving are his children, Stephen P. of Montville, Gregory M. of Montville, Barbara A. Green of NY, NY and Terence W. of Palm City, FL; sister, Ann Marie Donegan; 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at St. Pius X R.C. Church, Montville, NJ Friday, August 9th at 10:30 AM, with reception following at the Lake Valhalla Club. Arrangements are in care of the Codey & Mackey Funeral Home, Boonton, NJ. To share a memory or extend condolences, please visit www.codeymackeyfh.com. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the BJ Foundation, 15 Lenape Dr., Montville, NJ 07045.

Our families both moved to Valhalla in the 60's and we shared innumerable times at the lake,on the tennis courts and in the picnic grove - my favorite memory of Marty and Barbara is when they biked down to our going away party for the Schroth's in lederhosen!

Marty was one of a kind. As his neighbor for most of my childhood, he was always an inspiration along with Barbara. The Lake Valhalla community will miss his charm, humor and leadership. We are all indebted and your legacy will live on at LVC, and Turkey & Pyramid Mountains. Condolences to Steve, Greg, Barbara Ann, and Terry from the Metz Family.

I always admired Marty's sense of humor and can-do spirit. He was an inspiration to many, and so much fun. Our community has lost a great neighbor, leader, and friend. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". I will miss Uncle Marty very much. I will always remember the good times we had with him as well with Aunt Barbara. I always enjoyed their company and I am grateful they were able to share with me my special moments in my life as well as my children's special times. I love you Uncle Marty!
