NICHOLAS JAMES FIORELLO, SR. AGE: 87 FORMERLY OF NETCONG Nicholas James Fiorello, Sr., 87, formerly of Netcong, N.J. passed away peacefully on Friday, March 5, 2010 in Titusville, FL. He was born on March 10, 1922. Nick served in the U.S. Navy from September 1942 to October 1945 "3 Years, 1 Month, and 1 Day". He served aboard the USS Reeves DE-156 and was proud to have been part of the resupply of Allied Forces in Europe and North Africa. He was especially proud of transporting repatriated POWs from Tokyo Bay to waiting hospital ships, including Pappy Boynton of Black Sheep Squadron fame. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Nick worked his way to foreman at the Alan Wood Steel Company, where he worked until the mine closed in 1966. After the closing of the mine he purchased a milk route and became a Welsh Farms milkman. Nick was the devoted son of the late Nicola and Josephine Fiorello; loving brother of Lucy Webbe, Antoinette Lamberto (Louis), Josephine De Felice (Pat), Rose Kelly (Jack), Louise Fiorello, Joan Howard, Michael Fiorello, and Richard Fiorello (Debra); and respected and cherished uncle of many nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia (Morgan), and their five children, Dolores Digney (Ward), Pam Carafello (Ken), Kathy Shaeffer (Lee Daniel), Roberta Drummond (Scott), and Nick Jr. "Nicky" (Jocelyn). He was the beloved grandfather of Chuck Digney (Harriet), Tommy Digney (Deborah), Tammy Ziemba (Stan), Patrick Digney (Patty), Timmy Digney (Jackie), Amy Heller (Jeff), Kim Carafello (Mike) Danielle Carafello (Justyn), Chantel Shaeffer, Jennifer Hanson (Eric), Scott Drummond Jr. (Kendra), Shannon Rubin (Joseph), Andrew Fiorello, and Julianna Steward (James), as well as 27 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. I already spoke from the heart at the memorial service, but I wanted to let everyone know just how much my "favorite father-in-law" meant to me. He was all bark and no bite...well, not even all bark :-) and he welcomed me into the Fiorello clan with open arms from day one. I'm also grateful that Nick and Virginia's son was born so that I could meet and marry him -- I love him so much. Nick Sr., you will never be forgotten...you were and are a wonderful man. Much love from your favorite daughter-in-law.

Thank you so much for sharing the Obituary of Nick, Sr. here on Legacy. After reading it, I have a sense of what his (legacy) is: Warm, tender hearted, hardworking and fun-loving father, grandfather, uncle, husband, and friend who provided well for his family. A man who shared his experiences (Milk Truck, etc.) with his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. A man who loved his country and served us well in the military. And a committed, dedicated individual whose spirit goes on!

I'm sorry I never met Nick Sr. in person but am certainly glad I came to know him through Jocelyn (Married to Nick Jr.). I'm comforted by the news that his passing was peaceful and I hold his wife, children, and other family members in my thoughts and prayers as you move forward.

*So nice to see his precious, beloved, granddaughter, MICHELLE, mentioned.

Uncle Nick took me to my first baseball game - the 1960 All Star Game at Yankee Stadium. I still remember that day. I spent the Summer (age 12) working on the milk truck for five bucks a week! Six day week! He taught me the meaning of hard work, and a few other memorable things. I will always remember him, the milk route, fireworks and much more; but mostly I will remember a very strong man with a wonderful heart, ferocious look that could turn into a fabulous smile from one second to the next. I miss you Uncle Nick...
