Walter J. Somody

AGE: 66 • Born in Dover

Walter J. Somody, 66, from Plattsburgh, NY passed into the presence of his Savior July 8, 2011. He was born in Dover, NJ October 19, 1944; lived in Middle Valley, Long Valley and Chester, NJ until graduating from West Morris High School and joining the United States Air Forces. He served our nation proudly for 20 years: stateside, Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan during the Vietnam War and Guam. Walter was an active member of the North Country Veterans Associations Post #1; 22 year member of American Legion Post #20; VFW #125, DAV #79, AMRA and The American Legion Riders. Most Sundays nights for 19 years he worked Bingo at American Legion Post #20. He served on the Honor Guard, POW/MIA, Christmas Food Basket; Historian, Represented each organization at Patriotic functions and served the community and veterans across the North Country. He was patriotic and proud of our American military and even prouder of the American Flag. Walter collected eagles, wolves and had a variety of music. He loved to hunt and ride motorcycles. You could often find him serving those around him by word and action. He fought the good fight and will be sorely missed. God bless him for all his endeavors.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary E. (Way) Somody and daughter Maria L. Somody and granddaughter Asya L. Somody all of Plattsburgh, NY. Two sons, Walter J. Somody, Jr and Brian T. Somody of Sterling Heights, MI, daughter Patricia A. Ortner of Livonia, MI and two grandchildren Ashlee and Mikal Laughlin of Carleton, MI. His father, George J. Somody of Boonton, NJ; his brother and sister-in-law George A. and Sue Somody and three nieces Samantha, Brooke and Casey of Chester, NJ. One sister, Cindy Crider of Morristown, NJ; niece Lynn and Robert Smith and family of Washington, NJ and nephew, Paul and April Crider and family of Chester, NJ. Walter was predeceased by his mother Verna Somody.

Donations can be made in his name to NCVA #1 Building Fund. Calling hours were held on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 2:00 to 4:00 pm. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at First Assembly of God Church in Plattsburgh. Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. My condolence to his wife and family. Walt and I went to High School at West Morris Regional in Chester. He was a fun guy and we enjoyed our time on the various sport teams. We'll miss him.
