William Galop Obituary

William J. Galop, Jr.

Harwich - William J. Galop, Jr., 69, of Harwich passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018.

Born on March 23, 1949 in Passaic, NJ, he was the husband of Michele (Koch) of Harwich, MA. His parents were the late William J. Galop, Sr. and Agnes D. Galop.

He is survived by his son William R. Galop, and his beloved granddaughter Lily Galop of Blairstown, NJ; his sister Rita M. Seipp of Macungie, PA; his sister Amy C. Wolff and her husband Larry of Scottsdale, AZ; his brother Paul A. Galop and his wife Laurie of Chatham, MA; his brother Albert S. Galop and his wife Valeria of Roanoke, VA. He also leaves his niece Kate Galop of Chatham, MA; his nephew Peter Galop of Milton, MA; and his niece Brittany Galop of Roanoke, VA. He also leaves many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Bill was a long-time resident of Morris County NJ and graduated from Hanover Park High School in 1967. He graduated from Frederick Military Academy I 1968 in Portsmouth, VA. He was a past member of the Whippany Fire Department from 1972-1977. Bill was a retired Police Sergeant with the Mount Olive Police Department in NJ. His law enforcement career began with the Morris County Sheriff's Department in 1975. He initially worked Corrections and was later moved to Court Security. He was a graduate of the 6th Basic Police Class at the Morris County Police Academy. Sergeant Galop was hired by the Mount Olive Police Department on March 15, 1978 and was assigned to the Patrol Division. In 1983, Sergeant Galop was assigned as the Traffic Safety Officer in the Support Services Division. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1987. He supervised D.A.R.E., Megan's Law, Supplemental Police Services, and all traffic related matters. He was the Municipal Court Liaison for nearly two decades. He retired in 2006 after a combined thirty-one years of law enforcement service.

Sergeant Galop was an Accident Reconstruction and Drug Recognition Expert and served the Department as a Firearms Instructor. He was a Police Instructor and subject expert on Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, D.W.I. Recognition/Case Law, Motor Vehicle Law, and Accident Investigation. He received Lifesaving, Exceptional Duty, Grand Cordon, and Honorable Service Awards. He was the recipient of twenty-five Letters of Commendation.

Bill will be dearly missed for his unconditional love for his family, and his dry, witty humor. He was the type of man that added many years to fellow police officers' careers with his uncanny ability to bring a single officer or group of officers to tears of laughter with his stories.

Bill and Michele relocated to Harwich, MA in 2006 and became actively involved with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League until the time of his passing.

A memorial service will be held for Retired Sergeant William "Bill" Galop at the Budd Lake Firehouse, 378 U.S. Route 46, Budd Lake, NJ on Friday, June 1, 2018 from 4 PM to 8 PM.

It is with greatest of sorrow I learned of the passing of Bill. To the Galop family I can say nothing to mitigate your grief or relieve your sorrow; but if the sincere sympathy of myself and friends can bring any consolation, I can assure you that you possess it in its fullest extent.

With great regard and sincere sympathy

Bill and I were classmates as well as friends during high school and our paths crossed again professionally in later years. He was a great American who accomplished a great deal during his lengthy career in law enforcement. I'm saddened to learn of his passing.
