Theo Klein Obituary

Our father passed away Oct. 22nd at his home north of Ellensburg, where he lived since 1972. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Kathleen (2004) and his first son Lance Klein (1964).

Ted grew up in the farm country southeast of Seattle, WA. He was raised by his grandparents on the family farm, during the great depression. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy, and went through flight training to become a pilot during World War II. He met our mother when she was attending University of Washington, and working in the shipyards during wartime.

Ted fought for our country as a fighter pilot in the Pacific. He saw extensive combat duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS Manila Bay, as a member of the VC 80 Squadron. Ted was highly decorated for his actions in the historic battle of Leyte Gulf, a turning point in the war. Upon his return, he and Kathleen wed. They began a family in Pullman, WA where he attended WSU. After graduation, he took a position as foreman of the Harder ranch near Ritzville, WA, at the time the largest cattle ranch in the state. At the end of his tenure there, he began his career with the state Dept. of Natural Resources in Ephrata, WA. He and the family would then move to Olympia, WA and finally to Ellensburg, where he and Kathleen built a home.

Ted retired as an Area Manager after 26 years with the DNR. He and Kathleen then traveled across North America and the world. Always returning to Ellensburg to spend time with their many friends and family.

Ted enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He also loved the water and had many adventures in the freshwater lakes, and saltwater shores of the Pacific Northwest. However, his greatest joy was being with family. He had many visits throughout the year by all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We will all remember him not only for his character and strength, but also for his kindness and gentleness. He enjoyed a good laugh, and always thought of others first, selfless to the end.

Following the passing of Kathleen, Ted filled his days volunteering at the nursing home where Kathleen spent her final months as well as the Red Cross. He played pool at the Senior Center and made good friends there. He was an avid sports fan, and excelled at basketball as a young man. He always had dogs at home and enjoyed taking care of them.

All who knew him will remember him as a great man, one of America's greatest generation. Above all he was the best husband, dad and grandpa that anyone could ever have. "Dad, you will always be loved and never forgotten."

Diagnosed with lung cancer on September 23, Ted's children pledged to help him spend his final days at home, each spending a week taking care of him. That week was the last of many gifts from him to his children. He passed away in the early morning of October 22 with Lisa at his side.

Ted's survivors include his children Kristin Carrico of Vancouver, WA, Leslie Bateman of Victoria, B.C., Lisa Dahlgreen and her husband Matt of Wenatchee, WA. Kevin Klein of Friday Harbor, WA, five granddaughters and two great grandchildren.

A celebration of Ted's life will be held Friday, November 6, 2009, 2 pm at Steward & Williams Tribute Center in Ellensburg. A reception will follow at the Hal Holmes Community Center. In lieu of flowers, donations of grocery store gift cards for the Senior Center's Thanksgiving dinner or Hospice friends would be appreciated.
