William Craven Obituary

William Amos "Will" Craven passed away on June 25, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of quiet strength, steady leadership, and lifelong service to the Roslyn community.

Born in Roslyn, Washington, on September 18, 1938, Will was the second youngest of thirteen children in a family whose roots trace back to the African American coal miners recruited to Roslyn in the 1880s. By the 1970s, the Cravens were the last remaining Black family in town, carrying forward the legacy of Roslyn's Black pioneer community.

Will began working at Walter Strom Junior High while still a student, later serving for decades as a janitor at both the junior high and Cle Elum-Roslyn High School. He was also the longtime caretaker of Mt. Olivet Cemetery, following a tradition started by his father. His commitment to community spaces and mentoring youth left a lasting impression on generations.

In 1975, Will was appointed mayor of Roslyn, becoming the first Black mayor in Washington state. He was elected in his own right the following year and served until 1979. Though a historic figure, he chose humility and continued his caretaking work, leading by quiet example.

Will married Virginia Lee Smith in 1966, and together they raised six children. He was a devoted grandfather and a guiding presence to many nephews and cousins who came to live in Roslyn. His life was marked by presence over praise-he simply showed up and gave his best, again and again.

Funeral services will be held on July 5, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Roslyn Presbyterian Church, with burial to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery and a reception at the Roslyn Eagles.

I miss your dad. He, and your mom, were an important, positive presence around Roslyn and were wonderful neighbors. Your dad was always cheerful and ready to smile given the slightest reason. I am fortunate to have been his neighbor for so long.
