Steve Kinard Obituary

Steve Allen Kinard Sr.

September 2nd, 1952 - November 21st, 2024

Steve Allen Kinard Sr., 72, passed away unexpectedly of heart-related causes on November 21st, 2024, at his home in Dallas, Texas.

Born on September 2nd, 1952, in Houston, Texas, to Travis and Elsie Kinard, he was a proud native Texan. After completing high school in Houston, he went on to play football at Northwood College and completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Texas at Dallas.

It was in his college years that Steve met Myrna, the love of his life, who had come to Texas from Panama to study. Throughout the ensuing decades together, Steve and Myrna would travel to Panama many times. Steve would speak so often of the many fond memories of his time there and the love he shared with his Panamanian family. Despite the distance, language barrier, and cultural differences, Panama was his second home. Some of his happiest moments were there, surrounded by family, enjoying seafood, laughter, and one more attempt to cobble together a sentence in Spanish.

An eternal optimist and serial entrepreneur, Steve built a successful promotional products business and touched the lives of so many through his dedication to building long term business relationships. As a founder, employer, employee and partner he proved to be an asset in his many professional roles.

Steve was a devoted and loving father. For years he could be found working the chains at Cistercian Preparatory School football games where his sons, Steve Jr. and Scott, attended school. Long after their graduation Steve Sr. continued to attend Cistercian homecoming games. Some of his most cherished friendships were with the other parents at Cistercian, and the community he found there was a constant blessing in his life.

His friendships that spanned decades were a testament to his character and kind nature. Steve greatly enjoyed his trips to play golf with friends, and could often be heard describing the benefits of some new program, methodology or equipment upgrade that would shave a few strokes. Since 1995, he endured years of blunders of the hapless Dallas Cowboys, but did so (mostly) with a smile on his face and in the dear company of good friends and family. Regardless of outcomes, he enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship of sports, and will be remembered fondly with each game and tournament.

His life had many notable chapters and events including the marriage of his son Steve Jr to Kate in the mountains of Colorado, weekly brunches with his son Scott, the inexplicable adoption of Scott's pet, Lucy the Cat, and pretending like he didn't love that cat, extended family reunions in the woods of East Texas, Bible Study Fellowship on Mondays, the many adventures he shared with his "compadres", discussing the price action of S&P 500 mini-futures and Bitcoin, and the political campaign of his son Steve for state representative.

In recent years, Steve embraced what was surely his most revered title: "Grandpa". He adored his three grandchildren, Alice, Thomas, and William, and was a constant source of kindness, humor and unsanctioned ice cream treats. The children's faces would light up at the mere mention of Grandpa, and, at first sight, they would gleefully run to him with arms outstretched.

He is survived by his wife, Myrna, his children, Steve (Kate) and Scott, his 3 beloved grandchildren, his brothers, John and Travis, and many loved ones and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of Christ Church Plano (4550 Legacy Dr, Plano, TX 75024) on December 17th, 2024, at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception in the adjacent ministry building. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Christ Church Plano.

To Myrna, Steve Jr. (Kate), Scott, and those precious grand kids, I send my love, hugs and prayers. Memories of Steve will always hold a special place in my heart. Growing up, he would always try to figure out whether or not he was suppose to call me aunt. After all I was only four years older than him, about the same age as several of his cousins. I´ve always thought Steve to have many characteristics quite similar to my dad, his granddaddy. He, like granddaddy, was blue eyed, fair skinned, hard working, even-tempered, funny and loved life. Steve´s passing leaves my heart heavy but I know I will see him again in our Heavenly Home.

We´ve known Steve and Myrna since the early 70´s, through our marriages, children and grandchildren and lots of Dallas Cowboy games over the 50+ years. Our friendship never wavered and they feel like part of our family. Sending hugs and prayers to Myrna and the Kinard families. Gone but not forgotten and always in our hearts.

Steve and I have been coworkers and best friends for fifty years. In the last thirty-five years we have gone to Ruidoso, NM to play golf every year missing only one year. One interesting story is about 30 years ago we met in New Orleans for a get together. I was on the way home from a long business/driving trip on the east coast. Steve flew out to meet me. When we started to leave he said "drop me off at the airport". I said "what??? You aren´t going to drive home with me?" He said "Are you crazy? That´s 10 hours of hard riding". I never let him live that down.
Three things were always important in Steve´s life. 1) His wife, sweet Myrna 2) His family, especially those three grand babies and 3) Trying to beat me at golf. I will always love him and he will always be in my heart. I am so thankful for the years we shared together and I know we will meet again in Heaven.

My Sincerest condolences for family and friends of Steve's. Sorry I never really knew him as I am much younger and have lived south of Houston most of my life. Remember him occasionally at a family reunion and other times at Camp Ruby, he always had a smile on his face and a friendly hello. Reading about his memory today painted a beautiful picture of his life and great Love for and from his family.
