Eugene Kozlowski Obituary
February 13, 2025
Eugene C. ("Gene") Kozlowski passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 13, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Born in Sioux City, Iowa on December 20, 1930, Gene moved to Long Beach, California in his teenage years. He excelled academically, graduating as Salutatorian from Long Beach Polytechnic High School.
Gene attended the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in Chemistry and Petroleum Engineering. While there, he served as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army stationed in Korea. After his honorable discharge, he completed his degree and met his future wife, Janet. He later earned a master's degree from USC and an MBA from Pepperdine.
His entrepreneurial spirit led him to found Diversified Chemicals ("Di-Chem"), which grew into an industry leader before being sold to Halliburton in 1979. He later purchased several oilfield service companies and became the largest producer of crude oil in Nevada through his company Makoil Inc. Internationally, he obtained a concession in the Republic of Georgia, pursuing his dream of becoming an international oil and gas producer.
Gene served for many years as president of the California Independent Petroleum Association and was appointed Oil and Gas Commissioner to Arizona and Nevada. An enthusiastic traveler, he explored all continents with Janet, though he maintained that his most treasured moments were family gatherings at their vacation homes in California and Las Vegas, where they relocated permanently in 1998.
A true problem solver and go-getter, Gene lived by his motto "in search of the good life." He provided for his employees' wellbeing and offered encouragement to family members in need. His indomitable spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Gene is survived by his wife, Janet; three children: Cathy Kozlowski Heyne (Henri), Karen Kozlowski Smith (Jerry), and Gregg Kozlowski (Tracy); twenty grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
This is a man to be celebrated, and he will never be forgotten.
