Glen Osberg Obituary

Glen R. Osberg
Glen R. Osberg, "Oz", a longtime resident of Darien, passed away at Stamford Hospital on Friday, January 31, 2020. He was born in Hartford, CT, on May 26, 1941, to the late Ralph Earnest Osberg and Rita Doiron Osberg.
Glen graduated from East Hartford High School in 1959 and went on to attend Norwich University in Northfield, VT, receiving a B.A. degree in government in 1963. That same year, he joined the US Army as a 1st lieutenant where he served two years in active duty and four years in the reserves. He met his wife, Linda "Lindy" Harper, while in college, and they married on October 17, 1964, in Shaker Heights, OH. Glen had a 44-year career at IBM where he held various leadership positions focusing on international manufacturing and asset/inventory management; he retired in 2011.
As an avid reader, writer, historian and life learner, he was never short for words and loved spending time sharing stories with friends and family. Whether you knew him for years or mere minutes, Glen knew how to make you laugh with his quick-witted humor and light-hearted nature. He was a very proud husband, father and grandfather. If he wasn't on a boat on Long Island Sound, you could find Glen cheering from a sideline or applauding in an auditorium for one of his many grandchildren. He was passionate about all sports, but when it came to fishing, it was more like a devotion. "The Old Man and the Sea," as Lindy often referred to him, lived by the adage, "a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at the office."
Glen was a loyal, longtime supporter of the Blue Wave Athletics program and a member of the Darien YMCA. During retirement, he spent much of his time volunteering for several organizations, including the Darien Boat Club (Commodore), Norwalk Community College's Lifetime Learners Institute (President), Darien Men's Association, United Way and the SoundWaters Organization.
Glen is survived by his wife, Linda Harper Osberg, and their four children, Kaarn Lynch (Tom), Kristin Vrooman (Bobby), Erik Osberg (Sara), and Kinsey Tamberrino (Tom). He will also be forever remembered and missed by his 13 grandchildren: Haley, Courtney, William, Brett, Kelsey, Boden, Brinley, Van, Barclay, Oakley, Avery, Kylie and Brennan.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 8th at 3:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Darien.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer's Association with Lindy in your thoughts.

I was sitting watching some sailboats on the sound and my thoughts idly turned to Glen. I am stunned to hear of his passing. I always enjoyed a good conversation with Glen and talking about Hartford. My condolences to all.

I knew Kristin, and wanted to say sorry for your loss. I stumbled on this obituary by accident and remembered how kind you always were to me and after reading this obituary I understand why. From an anonymous friend PHS Class of '86.

We lost a great man indeed. My first Commodore at the Darien Boat Club. He always made me feel welcomed. I can't imagine working a DBC picnic without him. He was constant presence there.

I would run into him all over town and we would stop and speak for a few minutes. We'd talk about family, the NY Met's, and his fishing stories. Just a wonderful guy. This is a terrible loss. He will be missed dearly.

Glen and I majored in government together at Norwich ,and as such we had many, many classes together over four years at school. We learned some things, but better yet laughed a lot and had fun at Green Mountain College (Glen had a great smile) .Nice man and sincere condolences to his family and all of those in the Norwich family.Sig Borkoski '63.

We lost a good man.
Glen was one of my best and cherished friends for the past 40 years or so. I will miss him immensely.
Mentioning all Glen's accomplishments, including all his post retirement activities, are too numerous to mention, but he is to be so admired for them all.
Our many lunches together were so enjoyable for me, especially seeing the smile on his face when I insisted on a complete rundown on all 13 of his grandkids. Glen was modest but so proud.
These last years have not been easy for Glen but he faced them with strength and grace.
I already miss you my friend, RIP.

As a fellow 1963 graduate and fellow New Englander, I remember Oz as a quality person who was unassuming, confident, intelligent, and friendly.

He was the kind of cadet who made Norwich PROUD.

The best college roomate a guy could have. "Os" was a serious and unassuming student with a great sense of humor. He brought me back to the reason a student goes to college, not to party, but to study and learn. I learned a great deal from Glen and went on to get my MA in English so I could pass his influence on to my students in private school in New Hampshire and later, Barcelona, Spain. RIP Glen! You were the best!

I knew Glen through Norwalk Community College and veterans programs in Norwalk. He was a supporter of the American Legion in Norwalk where I'm a member and he just joined a few months ago. Kind, easy going, quick with a laugh. He'll be missed.

I didn't know Glen for very long as he recently hired me for LLI. He was a wonderful leader, always pleasant and comfortable to be around. I am thankful to have worked with him but very sad his time was cut so short. He truly enjoyed himself and was very proud of his family. My sincere condolences.
