Jeanne Asher Obituary

Jeanne Hubbell Asher, a 22-year resident of Darien and 15-year resident of Rowayton, died at her home in Guilford following a brief illness

Born in Bronxville, NY, the daughter of the late Ruth and John W Hubbell, she grew up in Rye, NY and graduated from Rye Country Day School She received her bachelor's degree from Connecticut College in 1961 with a major in music

Following college graduation, she attended graduate school at Columbia University Teachers College and became one of the first teachers in HeadStart, working in Brooklyn NY

After having children, she worked as an interior decorator for most of her career She also managed her mother's international antiques business which was represented at The New York Winter Antiques Show Mrs Asher was an active volunteer in the Darien school system, particularly the English department of Darien High School She also volunteered at the Darien Public Library At the time of her death, she was writing a book and tutoring in New Haven at St Martin de Porres Academy

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Gayle Asher, a well-known Connecticut artist and former instructor at the Rowayton Art Center, and their three children, Lee Asher Prince (Chevy Chase, Md), Carole Asher (New York, NY), Scott Asher (Atlanta Ga), their spouses Ted Prince, Sam Mandel & Gretchen Asher, and her five grandchildren (Avery & Haley Prince; Will, Alex & James Asher) She is also survived by her two sisters, Suzy Hubbell Jaeckel (South Kingston, RI) & Pat Hubbell Becker (Guilford)

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 11, at 11 am, at United Church of Rowayton

Memorial donations may be made to St Martin de Porres Academy (208 Columbus Avenue, New Haven CT 06519) or United Church of Rowayton
