Joanne Ferguson

Joanne Ferguson, a resident of Greenwich since 1962, and mother and grandmother of Darien residents, died on January 13 She was 83 years old  The daughter of Joseph and Anna Besch, she was born in Albany, NY on April 21, 1929

Joanne was graduated from Albany Academy for Girls and attended Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY  After college, she became an elementary school teacher in Albany  She later moved to New York City to work with a food and fashion photographer

Several years later, she met her future husband, Wright Ferguson, at a gathering of friends in the city  They were married in Albany on October 20, 1956

In 1962, they moved to Greenwich with their three young children – twins Annie and Wendy, and Wright, Jr

Joanne was an active volunteer in numerous charities and related projects in the Greenwich area She gave generously of her time to Christ Church Greenwich She served on the Christ Church Altar Guild for many years, was a receptionist in the Church office for 25 years and also worked in the bookstore  She volunteered her time at Community Centers Inc, an organization that seeks to broaden opportunities for disadvantaged youngsters and teenagers   In addition, she worked at the soup kitchen at St Luke's in Stamford  She was also a member of the Junior League of Greenwich

The family joined the Belle Haven Club in 1964 and was very involved in Club activities and events, Joanne particularly when her husband was Commodore in 1977-1978

Joanne is survived by her husband of 56 years, their twin daughters Annie and Wendy, their son Wright, Jr, his wife Kinsey and their daughters Kate, Charlotte and Elizabeth and her sister Betty Ann Solinger of New York City

She will be remembered for her kindness and generosity and her love of family and friends  She will be dearly missed

A wake will be held at Gallagher Funeral Home at 31 Arch Street on Thursday, January 17th from 5-8 PM and the Funeral service will be held at Christ Church Greenwich on Friday, January 18th at 11:00 AM
