John Timbers Obituary

John W. Timbers
John W. Timbers, age 76, passed away peacefully at home in Bethel, CT on May 23, 2019. John was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1942 to Charlotte T. Timbers and the Honorable William H. Timbers who later served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. John graduated from Darien High School in 1960 and from Dartmouth College in 1964, after which he attended the University of Edinburgh in Scotland as a Rotary Scholar. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1968, he clerked for the Honorable Inzer B. Wyatt on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. From 1973 to 1976, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York under Paul J. Curran and Robert B. Fiske, Jr. He later practiced law as an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York and in private practice in Stamford, CT.
John was married for 50 years to Marilyn D. Timbers; they raised their family in Stamford and later moved to Bethel. John served as President of the North Stamford Association during the 1980s and attended St. Francis Episcopal Church in North Stamford. John was an avid skier, model railroad enthusiast and lifelong runner who ran the New York City and Hartford marathons and regularly participated in the Boston Buildup and Fairfield County road races.
John is survived by Marilyn and their five children, their five grandchildren and his three siblings Nancy, Dwight, and William Jr. (Nick).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Masonicare Hospice Care of Wallingford, CT. There will be a memorial service to celebrate John's life later in the summer.

Great memories had and more on the horizon. John was a doer!
Now he rests deeply from his well-lived life.

I was just checking online this morning to see what John was doing these days and
whether, like me, he was a retired lawyer or, more likely, still energetically doing
something productive and useful. I was shocked to read that he had passed away less than a week ago. John and I were college classmates and went to the same law school. I remember in freshman year at college, when several of my classmates were running for class president, that John was a standout. He went
around the dorms knocking on doors and introducing himself. His homemade
election posters read : Termites love Timbers ! He served as our class president
and was re-elected I believe more than once. We became friends at that time. I
always enjoyed talking to him and experiencing his upbeat personality. Once I had
dinner with him and his father, who was then a federal judge on the Second Circuit. Both struck me as unassuming but very outstanding individuals. More than
20 years after graduation, John and I happened to attend the same event in NYC.
John immediately recognized me and we had a wonderful time catching up. I always imagined that as a fellow runner that John would live forever. Now he is
gone and the world is poorer. My deepest condolences to his family.
