Marshall Tharp
December 4, 2024
Marshall A. Tharp of Sarasota, Florida died on the 4th of December 2024. He was 95. He was the son of the late Carey E. Tharp and author Louise Hall Tharp, of Darien, Connecticut.
Marshall grew up in Darien, where he lived for over fifty years. He graduated from King School in Stamford, CT, Class of 1947, and Pennsylvania Military College, Class of 1951. He earned an ROTC commission in the Army, ultimately promoted to First Lieutenant. He served as a platoon leader with the Second Division during the Korean War, 1952-1953. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal, the Commendation Medal, the Korean Service Medal with three battle stars, and the Combat Infantrymen's Badge.
In 1954 Marshall married his wife of 67 years, Helen "Sue" Ogden of Ogden, Pennsylvania, whom he met at a dance while in college. Marshall and Sue settled in Connecticut, where they raised their four children. Marshall pursued a successful career in corporate financial accounting in commercial banking, stock brokerage, and public utilities, from which he retired in 1991.
In 1993 Marshall and Sue moved to the village of Five Islands on the coast of Maine. There he served as Director and Curator of the Stone Schoolhouse Museum of the Georgetown Historical Society. In 1997 Marshall and Sue became snowbirds, dividing their year between a home in Sun City Center, Florida, and their Maine residence.
Marshall is survived by his children Linda Tsao, Edward Tharp, and Carol McGough. He is predeceased by his wife Helen Sue Tharp, his son David Tharp, and his brother Carey E. Tharp, Jr. Marshall was the proud Grandad of nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
