Russell Harding Obituary

Russell A Harding
September 8, 2022
On September 8, 2022, Russell "Russ" Harding, age 90, former astronomer, astronomy educator, teacher trainer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, dedicated volunteer, avid skier, patron of the arts, world traveler, and beloved friend to many, died at Glen Hill Center in Danbury after a prolonged illness. Russ is survived by Kathy Burns of Stratford, CT, the Edward Crist family of Cleveland, Ohio, John and Vicki Boccuzzi of Newtown, CT and his many cousins and friends. Often referring to himself as a misguided missile, Russ had a whimsical approach to life which brought much joy to those around him. Children especially loved his unusual taste in gifts for all occasions which were always fun and never practical. Russ was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Albert and Anne Harding. His Catholic education at St. Ignatius brought him to Cornell University where he studied pre-med, but he soon decided his passion was astronomy. In true Russ style he left Cornell and pursued a very broad education at schools in every corner of the country, including his undergraduate studies at Xavier University. Russ earned many degrees and worked as an adjunct professor at several colleges and universities. Russ chased astronomical events across the globe before settling down as an astronomy educator at Middleburg Hts. High School in Ohio, the McDonnell Planetarium in Saint Louis, MO and then opened the Gengras Planetarium in West Hartford, CT. Russ moved to Darien, CT and worked for Norwalk Public Schools until his retirement. During his time in Connecticut he volunteered for many years at the Norwalk Oyster Festival and made many lifelong friends through that work. He was an active member of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Connecticut Science Teachers Association, National Science Teachers Association, Earth Science Educators Association and was a regular presenter at conventions and meetings. Russ skied throughout the United States and in various European countries. He owned and operated a ski house in Vermont for a short time and also dabbled in real estate and both foreign and domestic investments. Late in life he decided to learn Portuguese and struggled with the language on many trips to Brazil. His generous support of a long list of socially conscious organizations, especially those that promoted peace and understanding as well as environmentally focused groups and those that deliver food and medical services to those in need, continues even after his passing. Russ was a unique individual who lived life on his own terms until his medical conditions set a new path for him. Russ will be remembered for the special human he was and his friends are reminded of his nonsensical goodbye "Keep your tail light lit." There is no doubt that somewhere the misguided missile is hurling towards his next adventure with tail lights blazing. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Russ's name to a non-profit of your choice which provides food or medical services to those in need.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Newtown, CT on October 15th at 11:30 PM. Please respond to email [email protected] if you would like to attend and we will forward further details by return email.

Russell was quick to connect to me as a new teacher and continued that support making me love each day as he did.

I was so saddened to hear of the passing of Russ. I used to see him regularly at the monthly meetings of the Westport Astronomical Society. Always a bright, toothy smile followed by a fun story. I'll miss Russ but I'm so very happy he lived to be a very old man who is remembered so fondly by so many.

My apologies for being so late with this posting. Russ was a true friend who influenced the course of my life beginning with when I first met him while I was attending Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, CT. I used to visit him at the Robert B. Oliver Planetarium in Roton Middle School regularly on the way home from school. There, he helped me foster my interest in astronomy and learn the planetarium trade. We soon became fast friends and often went to Captain Henry's in Rowayton in his 1971 VW Beetle. His kindness and encouragement led me to pursue a degree in education/astronomy, as well as buying a Beetle as my first car. I continue teaching astronomy to this day.

To his many friends and family, know that Russ's teaching ability influenced at least one student greatly. He was indeed a kind, gentle, and very giving soul. May he rest in peace.

The DeChant (Cleveland) family would like to extend their condolences regarding Russ' passing. Russ was both a family friend (and childhood friend of our late father) when we were young and our individual friend as we became adults. Our memories span time in Parry Sound Canada, Ludlow Vermont, skiing etc. His infectious love of science helped guide me (Larry) to a career in science and engineering. Though he will be dearly missed, his legacy lives on through the lives he touched. (Larry DeChant and the DeChant family)

Russ will be missed for his cheer, frequent check ins and generous spirit. I met him at my workplace, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, years ago, only to find out he also knew my Aunt and Uncle in Toledo, OH! How's that for coincidence. What a treat to have known Russ. His dedication to the ASP was truly special. He will truly be missed. Joycelin Craig

Russ and I shared a passion for astronomy and good conversation. I was always pleased when my mother would announce "Russ is in town" when I was headed to Cleveland for the Holidays. Like colors or notes in harmony, time spent with Russ just felt good and never got old. In our most recent conversations, when I'd ask how he's doing he'd always say "better every day Mark, better every day." I'll miss you Russ.
