I will remember many things:
1. Pete loved to fly. As long as I remember he wanted to spread his joy to others. He invited me to fly many times but I was a little scared so never did go with him. If I knew he was going to live to be 96 I probably would have gone up with him.
2. Pete loved to paint. I visited his studio on the 3rd floor of Chaminade many times and Pete never hesitated to set aside whatever he was working on to show me something; sometimes recent paintings, sometimes the new St Leonard's Christmas card, sometimes some of his older works. He always tried to explain the intricacies of the technique, but I never really understood very well. He remained undaunted though, and was always ready to teach me again the next visit to his studio.
3. Pete was a little irrascible. For example approximately 2013 his annual St Leonard's Christmas card didn't include an image of Jesus. The card was beautiful, and Pete was justifiably proud, but my mom (Pete's 1st cousin Mary Murphy, who also lived at St Leonard's and was 6 years Pete's elder) considered this at least a moderately blatant sacriledge. For the entire next year she scolded Pete every time they saw each other. Finally when Pete unveiled his 2014 Christmas card with Jesus on the front, mom finally, somewhat begrudgingly, slowly seemed to get over it and let up on Pete..... that is until it became time for the 2015 card and she felt duty bound to remind him again about how to plan his 2015 card!
4. Pete was always active; never seemed content to just sit and grow old. Pete seemed to me to always be pushing himself onward, and dragging along anyone who got close enough to be caught up in his boundless energy.
5. He was a good story teller, and had been a lot of places, seen a lot of history, met a lot of people, and was always interesting to talk to.
6. I remember how much his life was devoted to Gicky. They were not exactly identical (he seemed to like to be out & about and she seemed to like to be at home for example), but his very existence seemed completely inseparable from her to the very end.
7. I'll remember his kindness to me and all my family. I never had anything but the kindest treatment from Pete. We will all miss him a lot.
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to help me help others remember the great things Pete brought into my life.
Jim Murphy,
Son of Pete's 1st cousin, Mary (Hohl) Murphy
