Betsy SCHAPP Obituary

SCHAPP, Betsy Ann

Betsy Ann Schapp, 84, of Montgomery, Ohio, passed away in her sleep on January 25, 2021. Betsy was born on September 1, 1936, and grew up in St. Louis. She led a rich life filled with family, music, education, art, and most importantly, her faith. She was the beloved wife of 63 years to Ron, loving

mother to Ruth (Steve) Metsch,

Renee (Alan) Thurman, and R. Joel (Vicki) Schapp, and proud Grandma B to Kevin (Kristin) Thurman, Mark (Kelly) Thurman, Craig Metsch, Natalie Metsch and Brian Schapp. Music was an integral part of her life and in fact, is how she and Ron met. Over the years, they sang in many church and secular choirs, which even allowed them to travel the world. After raising her family, she returned to school and completed her

undergraduate degree begun at Washington University in St. Louis and finished at the University of Akron, graduating with a BFA. For many years thereafter, she applied her education in the business world as a technical illustrator. Betsy was a

talented artist who worked in many mediums and was an

especially accomplished quilter. Ron and Betsy's home served as a gallery, showcasing her many works. Betsy was an active supporter of her grandchildren as they grew up, always

interested in supporting and attending their many interests and activities. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, burial will be private, and a celebration of Betsy's life will be held at a later date, when it is safe for many to gather again. In lieu of

flowers, memorial contributions in Betsy's name can be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7701 Kenwood Rd.,

Cincinnati, Ohio 45236. Mihovk-Rosenacker Funeral Home.

Betsy was a joyous woman of faith. It spilled over into her singing and in her beautiful smile. I was privileged to sing with her for several years in Musica Sacra and enjoyed getting to know her and Ron through our years singing together. She was an exceptional quilter and I always loved seeing projects she was working on. Mostly I remember how sweet and kind Betsy always was. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

I am so sad to hear of Betsy's death. It has been a pleasure to sing with her with Musica Sacra all these years. You and your family will remain in my prayers.

It is with a heavy heart that I learned last evening from Warren Werner of Betsy's passing.

I have known the Schapps since the early 1960's as Ron Schapp worked with me, Ron Winkler and Don Shain at Union Electric and we were also neighbors in the new housing developments in Florrisant. Our families visited and became close friends. Ron left UE and eventually worked for an engineering firm in Pittsburgh. Later, in the late 70's, I contacted Ron and he joined Bussmann in the Cincinnati district. The Schapps are among the finest people I have ever known, very sincere, cordial, responsible and religious.

While working at UE in the early 60's the Arch was being built and some us would walk down to the Arch to observe the incredible work in progress. Any engineer was impressed, especially in the days when the engineering work was largely done by hand, before computers were available. Betsy was an industrial artist for GE and she knew I was smitten with the Arch so she painted an oil painting for me which I have kept over the years and it now resides on a prominent shelf in my mancave and I see it every day, so I am reminded of these special people and what a privilege it was to know them.

Some years later, I think in the late 80's or early 90's, Mary Ann and I attended a convention in Cincinnati and we had a chance to visit with and have dinner with them.

And, subsequently, after we returned to the St. Louis area in 2012, I formed the FOB Club and Ron was a member and was able to join us a few times when his visits to St. Louis coincided with the FOB Club luncheons.

Ron and Warren have been lifelong friends, and it was through my friendship with Ron, that I had the privilege of meeting the Werners and my friendship with Warren endures.

Ron Schapp has many health issues himself so this will be especially challenging for him. He does have responsible children to assist him, so that is reassuring.

Very sorry to hear of Betsy's passing. Although I never met her, I always enjoyed listening to Ron's stories of her and their family during his visits to Hill-Rom. She was a special lady.
