My old friend, my life got busy and I've been self absorbed and I didn't know you were even gone. You helped me through tough times. I wondered about you over the years but didn't think to check in. I'm so sorry. Thank you for having been there. You will always be remembered.

Dale, I'll never forget that you helped me fulfill my lifelong dream of petting tigers. I still have the column you wrote about my wish and treasure the letters of reply you forwarded to me. Thank you for all you did for your community and the people who lived there. Thank you for Blue too - the kitty you rescued and asked me to keep. He has brought so much joy to my life. Your caring spirit knew no bounds. I feel very blessed to have called you my friend.

Many, many years ago, Dale Huffman wrote an article on Riverside Barbers entitled "Hair today, gone tomorrow". I wish I could find his article, one of the barbers was my stepbrother's dad. It was a really interesting and well worded article! He at one point mentioned how Jim, Manager/Owner/CEO of Riverside Barbers talked about how customers we're "less picky". LOL. Great article, Dale!

My parents and I called upon Dale to help us find the Angels who helped them when I was not available. They'd moved from Florida to Ohio to be near me in their declining years and knew few people in Dayton. It was a hot, humid August day when my dad decided to take my mom out for a ride. She was in a nursing home for rehab. I was at a workshop at Bergamo and my cell phone was turned off. Their car died. A young couple came by and noticed their dilemma. The woman took Mom back to the nursing home while the man stayed with Dad until a tow truck came for the car. Then the couple took my dad back to his condo. In all the excitement, Dad neglected to get their names. We called Dale and asked him to help us find them. After he wrote a wonderful column about these angels, my parents received a phone call and we were able to have a reunion and give them our heartfelt thanks. We invited Dale to the party, but he was unable to come. He held a special place in my heart for his uplifting stories. In a time where there is so much distressing news, we need more of that. He is missed as well as all the goodwill he spread in our community. RIP

I remember in 1989 when my Mother was sick and dying Dale came to visit her. My sister had wrote Dale a letter telling him what a wonderful Mother she was. She raised 3 children on her own while working at Inland in Vandalia. He even brought her a Pepsi because my sister had told him how much my mother loved her Pepsi. He took the time to listen intently to her reminisce about her life as single Mom. There will be jewels in your crown Mr. Huffman for all your kindness you spread across your lifetime. Tell my Mom hello when you see her. I along with many other Dayton natives will remember you fondly.

I enjoyed the opportunity of meeting Dale a couple times. In 1989, I received the Disabled Professional Woman of the Year award and so he wrote a Dayton Daily News article about that accomplishment. Last year, Wright State University honored him for his career and he gave a speech about his passion for journalism. He shook hands of people who congratulated him on this accomplishment.
I always enjoyed his column and particularly liked it when it became daily. His stories about people were so heartwarming and he clearly articulated his passion through what he wrote. I missed reading his columns when he had to retire. Likewise, I missed the tradition he established of honoring a Mother of the Year. Dale has given a lot of good to the local community. I will always remember this good, compassionate man. It is hard to lose someone so great. Condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace after his final interview with God. Thanks for the great cartoon, Mike Peters!

Dale and I had many conversations about his heart touching columns. Do they matter he'd ask. I explained this way. When bosses and higher ups push front page news in bold type and mainly negative stuff, if you'd ask readers what they remembered about that days paper it wasn't the job loses, business closings or terrible things human beings do to others. No, it was one of his stories about the family who's Christmas presents were stolen and his loyal fans would donate to make it a merry holiday or a sick child, missing pup and even a long forgotten flagpole dedicated to veterans that Dale called attention to which was neglected no more. That is what people remember which says so much about the man we loved. Yes Dale you mattered big time and then some. Sleep warm my friend and tell Mama Kay hello. Love you, Buch

How gloriously joyful Heaven surely is, having welcomed Dale Home At Last! He was on loan to us for more than 79 years, and I can only imagine how happy his mother and brothers are to have him rejoin them! The countless friends and people about whom he wrote, that went on ahead, must be surrounding him in a halo of everlasting gladness, just as those of us yet to be reunited with our loved ones in Heaven, will one day find ourselves back with those that hold parts of our hearts in theirs. To have been able to meet Dale a few times, including last July, when he spoke at the library, was to have known the quiet sweetness that was this special man we were so blessed to know! I'm so glad Dale is now freed from his earthly trappings, the body that had simply worn out over all the years. We shall all miss him, but my prayer is that we keep him alive forever by carrying his memory in all our hearts.

I will miss my dear friend Dale very much!! I met Dale when I was 2 years old at the spaghetti warehouse. Dale was celebrating his birthday and my grandparents had me take a bottle of wine over to his table to help him celebrate. Dale promised that he would make my birthday as great as I made his that night. Dale never missed a single birthday with me for the next 30 years writing articles about our experiences. I was known as the "Birthday Buddy". I have so many great memories that I hold very close to my heart. He was a very caring and kind man. He was a great friend. I know that Mama Kay and Memaw will keep you in line. Your "Birthday Buddy" IMG_6549.jpeg

When my husband began planning for life after an Army career while stationed in Louisiana, we subscribed to the Dayton Daily News back in 1989. Dayton was to be our home and we wanted to find out more about it. We quickly found that Mr. Dale Huffman was one of our favorite columnists. We knew we could count on his insightful and positive outlook on life to give us a sense of what Dayton was all about. Condolences and heartfelt sympathy for all who were touched by his life. He will certainly be missed.

My wife and I were both saddened to learn od Dale Huffman's passing. Dale was such a warm and caring person. He genuinally cared about people of all walks of life, evidanced by the columns he wrote over the years. I will always remember the article he wrote about my wife's cat that lived for 25
years and passed away at 27 years of natural causes. I would inevidivly run into him while shopping at Kroger's in Miamisburg where both he and we live,
and we would share moments in our lives and families. He always reminded
me of what Mark Twain would have been like if had lived in our day. Farewell
my friend, you will be greatly missed in a world where kindness and gentleness and love and respect are so desparately needed. My God bless you greatly!

When my mother was struggling with kidney cancer herself in 1998 dale showed up at her and my sisters house with a cameraman and interviewed my mom for the newspaper because of all the hard work she was doing to try to graduate nursing school while being sick! He alongside of the head of the nursing department presented mom with an honorary nursing degree! She was soo happy and excited! He even did a follow up a couple weeks later after she passed away! I was extremely impressed with his effort and kindness he showed to my family and my mom! I will rember him for that forever!! What a kind generous and caring man!! Thank you Dale Huffman may you RIP!!#

My heart hurt when I heard the news about Dale's passing. A dozen or more thoughts came flooding through my mind, memories of his kindness, his great smile, his devotion to his mom, his gentle caring love for all. I remember how much fun we had with him at the old Euchre games at Miamisburg Eagles, how he became an instant friend to everyone there who seemed to need one, how he'd always take the time to listen to your troubles and be genuinely interested in everyone, a real "people person", young or old, rich or poor, didn't matter to Dale. RIP, my old friend, many of us will miss you always.

I remember looking forward to reading Dale's columns, particularly during his amazing feat of over 3,000 consecutive articles. As a survivor of kidney cancer twice (I will be 82 in August), I sent him cards that I hoped would let him know he was not alone. A picture of him with get well cards and his gracious thank yous was printed in the Dayton Daily News. The entire Miami Valley was fortunate to have Dale as a citizen.

I first met Dale in 2002 when I started working as the director of community relations at Hospice of Dayton. He was welcoming and warm to me immediately and was always willing to help us tell personal stories about our patients and families. He also helped mentor me in my position, offering advice and encouragement as I learned the ropes. Our friendship continued as I moved to my current position with the American Heart Association and began working as a freelance writer for the Dayton Daily News. He took a personal interest in my writing and in my son, Matthew, who joined the Army and served 18 months in Afghanistan. Dale was a wonderful and kind spirit and a bright light to all whose lives he touched. I'm proud to be able to share positive stories in the Life section weekly today, just as he did for so many years. I will forever miss this man who was always willing to share so much of himself with me and the community!

I will so miss this talented, sensitive, kind man. There aren't too many of his ilk around today. My mom read every column to herself and to us. We heard "Did you read Dale Huffman today?" so many times that we became dedicated readers. I still have the letter he sent my mom when I nominated her for Mother of the Year. Although she didn't win, the letter from Dale with a copy of the letter I wrote was one of her prized possessions. God bless Dale's family and friends. We have lost a great community advocate and dear friend. Dale, please tell my mom that I miss her ... her name is Dorothy Walker, and she will be so happy to see you!

I, like all ever touched by the quality of the person of Dale, mourn deeply our loss, as well as the profound loss to his family.
I knew Dale when I was rabbi of Beth Abraham Syn,(I am now retired) Dale was the consummate reporter, in relating to me in our discussions, in his warmth and empathy, and the accuracy in his reporting.Once, he was informed we shared the same birthday,we are the same age!) and he sent me a beautiful warm personal message.
Dale leaves the world with a great loss. He was a mentor in love and kindness, as well the paradigm of what a reporter need be.
Perhaps his memories, and influences may serve as some consolation.

Dale befriended a family friend of ours, Alice, a woman with severe mental retardation. She adored him. He sent her flowers on her birthdays and would spend time with her and her parents. Alice is mostly non-verbal but would put her finger under her nose to symbolize his mustache and excitedly 'talk' about her friend Dale, while pointing to the many pictures of him in her photo album. What a loving, caring soul he was.
