The Family Chain

We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

"The way we receive one another in life - on the street, in the office, in our tone of voice or toss of the head - is the measure of our real understanding of Christmas." (Joan Chittister)
After reading this reflection, I thought of our dear brother Ed whose smile and gentle spirit touched, cheered, and influenced all those with whom he crossed paths.
There was this 6 foot 4 inch man who could light up a room with his presence and gentle smile, a man who loved his family, friends, children, music, horses, sports; a man who was happy going through old baseball cards, making CD's for his friends and family, doing a puzzle, playing scrabble, basketball and softball, feeding the birds, bringing carrots to the horses, putting up his parents' Christmas tree, visiting friends, writing regular letters to his "out-of-town sisters, organizing trips to the races, Sunday night basketball and Monday lunches at Marion's, and making cards for his family.
This quiet man will leave a gaping hole in the hearts of so many.
Although he certainly would never discuss himself or his goodness, Ed had a real understanding of Christmas and what it means to be a Christian.
The challenge and struggle for all of us who know and love Ed is to carry on and spread the goodness which he shared while dealing with the grief of his passsing on to a new life. We lovingly hold Ed up in prayer. Thanks, Ed, for being a big part of our lives! Your spirit lives on! We love you.

I never really knew my cousin Ed, but he was very active with my siblings. I probably had met him at some point during a family reunion. Bertha Westendorf was my Grandmother and Ed's Aunt, I believe? God Bless You during this trying time, and know that the Helmig Family will greatly miss such a wonderful man.

My sister, Patti, told me that Ed always took the time to stop at her desk and ask about our nephew Patrick, who had a traumatic brain injury 2 years ago. She regrets not spending more time with him, but said he was sincerely concerned, and a very loving man. I have been reading through the guest book and have a real sense that Ed was a wonderful man! Passionate about life and horses and his family and friends.

May the Good Lord Bless you all and help you through this time of loss. Just remember, he's up there smiling down on you. Always ask him to "talk to God" to help you through this.

Your cousin, Diane Salisbury

One of the things that I'm truly thankful for is to have had an Uncle Ed. He was so kind, fun-loving, helpful, caring, friendly, and generous to all of his nieces and nephews. I will always cherish our Saturday morning ventures that included soft pretzels, Grandma's & Grandpa's, and a mean game of cards, the Turkey Trot in which Ed blocked the sleet/rain for me, casino trips involving Ed teaching us how to actual play blackjack correctly, UD games with a visit at halftime, Riverdowns days and feeding the horses, etc, etc. Memories do last a lifetime, and I know he's watching over all of us with a smile.

I had the priveledge of knowing Ed for a few years during his visits to River Downs. Anywhere he went he brightened the room with his smile, and left it a happier place. His love for racing, and happy-go-lucky demeanor will be missed.

I am glad that Ed can now look down and see how many people he touched. As much as we miss him, it is wonderful to share stories of how many people he came into contact with that took him on as a friend or a brother. He was so easy to like and feel comfortable around - that says a lot about his family and his upbringing. The racetrack has a lot of colorful characters - what Ed brought to it WAS character. We'll never forget "Mr. Ed."

Dear Westendorf Family--
I was shocked and saddened to hear about Ed's passing. I've known him since our Chaminade days. He truly exemplified the best of Chaminade. Ed was a very selfless guy with a great empathy for everyone. Just one year ago this weekend, my father-in law, Marty Harmuth, passed away. Ed came by to pay his condolences. Just like him. He didn't know Marty but wanted to pay his respects. What a class guy he was. He personified everything that is good about Dayton--community, UD basketball, Pizza at Marions, hoops, friendship. Ed, your Class of '68 brothers will never forget you! We will cherish your memory and never forget all the good things you represent.
In Loving Memory,

Leslie Abbey

I knew Ed from the racetrack. We
e-mailed each other several times a month to keep up on racing news. He first started coming around our barn
in 2001 and over the years he became a friend. Ed had more friends than anyone I ever met, probably because he was just the nicest person in the world. He was
smart, funny, witty and loyal to everyone he knew. I will miss him greatly and wish to extend my sympathy to all of his relatives,
many of whom I met at the racetrack.

My sincerest sympathies goes out to all of the Westendorf's at this sad time. I was shocked to hear of Ed's passing. I know Ed from having him do our taxes for many years. I always looked forward to our "chats" as he reviewed the material. He would even come down to the car and deliver the finished material when I came to pick it up so I wouldn't have to park. He was a really, really nice guy and will be missed by many.

November 8, 2007

Our sympathy goes out to the Westendorf Family in this sad time. We have been Ed's nextdoor neighbors since he moved here and we couldn't ask for a nicer neighbor or person. I was on Ed's email list for the horse races, he loved talking about his horses. I walk everyday and sometime during the walk I usually saw Ed running. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

I am one of Florence (Sunny) Westendorf Kramer's grandsons, seventh child of Mary Kramer Leonard. My memories of the whole Westendorf clan are of raucus family reunions where every sport under the sun could be found, together with peals of laughter, lots of talking smack, and great food.

Above all else were the hugs and smiles and open arms for any newcomer to the family. I know I met Ed years ago as a child (he was 11 years my senior) and can easily understand how and why he became the exemplary man he was.

The Kingdom of Heaven has welcomed home another faithful servant and the Angel's Intramural Basketball League has a new star.

My sympathy and prayers are with my Westendorf aunts and uncles, cousins, and nieces/nephews.

We had the privilege of knowing Ed for the 8 years we've lived in Beavercreek. He was always so kind to our family, and you could not ask for a nicer neighbor. Over the years his friendly smile and thoughtful nature have brought our family so much joy. He spoiled our kids with fresh pretzels on Saturday's and giant boxes of their favorite candy on Halloween; the latest delivery just last week. His kind nature is already greatly missed by all us. He was an example of the kind of person we should all aspire to be. His family meant so much to him; you are all in our prayers.

The Westendorf Family:

Please accept my sympathies. I was shocked to hear the news of Ed's passing from my parents in Dayton. I was a classmate of Ed's at Chaminade and he was a great friend and fellow Eagle. Over the years Ed worked on reunions with us and he was always there to help - a great guy. Why do the good ones go too early?? I will keep Ed in my thoughts and prayers. I was very saddended to read of Ed's death this morning. As usual Tom Archdeacon was correct - everybody loved Ed. I worked at UD for many years and had the pleasure of working with Ed's parents Pauline and Jerry on their class reunion. I have known Ed and Tom for many years and Ed always had a nice word to share with me. He was just a great person on so many different levels. The Westendorf Family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. For many years, I had the priveledge of playing softball and being great friends with Ed. The Stephens Family sends our most heartfelt condolences.

November 7, 2007

I am truly shocked and deeply saddened with Ed's passing. While he has done my taxes for many years, I knew him long before that and consider him a true friend. We would talk UD basketball and basketball in general and I don't know that I've ever met anyone more genuine, more humble, more trusting then Ed. He was truly a good person who I will miss greatly.

Nick Gough

November 7, 2007

Ed was always there, always had the sense to do the right thing at the right time.

A bunch of us once played basketball in the Kettering Adult League. Because of Ed's athletic skill and leadership on the court, we were able to be more than a rag-tag bunch of guys attempting to play ball. In fact, we actually won a few championships and once beat a team of former UD players. Thanks to Ed, I was able to experience that even though I was barely able to walk and chew gum at the same time.

There are many good memories. His love of family, friends and sports was true and honest. His kindness and high moral character was an example to us all.

I can't speak for all of the gang, but I know for myself that I always expected Ed to be the last of us to go. He was just that sort of spirit, the unassuming leader who we always trusted and loved as a friend.

Life is short but memories and stories live on.

Ed & his family will be with us all in our thoughts. He will be missed.

Craig Kappeler

November 7, 2007

I first met Ed at our fathers' CPA Firm, Kappeler and Westendorf, back in October of 1974 and had the pleasure of working with him for some years. When he wasn't working, he was usually playing baseball or planning a trip to a horse race track. I also remember that he kept lists of the top 40's from WTUE and won so many radio contests that they had to limit him to once a month. He kept us laughing and has always been a good guy...

I had the pleasure of meeting Ed many years ago through his partner, Denny Ross. We played golf a few times and I'll always remember the kind hello when calling the office. I didn't spend a great deal of time with Ed but you just knew of how kind and caring he was as a person. He didn't have a negative bone in his body. I'll truly miss his kind greetings from this time forward. My sincere sympathy goes out to his entire family.

Jerry and Pauline: Eddie was one of the most pleasant and effective and friendly young men I have ever met. He was always interested in other people and their families and never concerned about himself and his own doings. He was a very fine accountant and would always talk to a person directly and personally about accounting problems. Eddie's unexpected passing was not only a great loss to you and the family, but to the whole community. With our prayers, Eileen and Pete Donahue.
