News Death Notice

STROBLE, Howard G. 1928-2016 87, died Sat., Jan. 16 of complications from advanced dementia. He was born in Portland, Ind., and was raised in Lima, Ohio. He graduated from Bowling Green University with a chemistry degree. After two years in the U.S. Army, he worked as a research chemist for National Cash Register, where he holds patents that advanced the microencapsulation technology used for carbonless copy paper (No Carbon Required or NCR paper) and scratch-and-sniff. He later worked for Monarch Marking Systems in Miamisburg. While at NRC, he was active in employee recreation activities, organizing bowling and golf leagues for many years. One of his proudest accomplishments was a hole-in-one in 1966 on the 13th hole of the NCR South Course. Mr. Stroble was co-owner of Pla-Mor Lanes until the 1990s. He refereed basketball, officiating high school, industrial league, AAU and small college games, and serving as rules interpreter. He lived most of his adult life in Dayton. He was a faithful member of Southern Hills Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School, and Christ United Methodist Church. He loved his churches, his family and sports, especially college basketball, golf and harness racing. He attended the Little Brown Jug in Delaware, Ohio, more than 50 times. He was a life-long learner and after retiring took classes through Sinclair Community College. He made cherished friends in all his pursuits and kept everyone smiling with jokes and stories. He moved to West Chester, Pa., seven years ago after his wife of 51 years, Alice (nee McCrum), died. He is survived by daughters Zoe Werden (Dave) of Montrose, Co., and Zan Hale of West Chester, Pa., and son Zack Stroble (Juli) of Chicago, and grandchildren Alicia Plantz (Mark), Hannah Golaszewski (Frank), Adeline Hale, Jackson Stroble and Jayme Stroble. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Feb. 13 at the Southern Hills United Methodist Church, 2287 S. Dixie Hwy., Kettering. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) or Compassionate Care Hospice Foundation (cchfoundation.net).

Zoe, Zan and Zack,
The memory of your dad's passing came up in my email today. Fond memories of his keen sense of humor. There always seemed to be a hit of mischief in his eyes and smile. As you remember your dad, may you know he was appreciated by many others. And whenever I see a scratch and sniff... of course I think of Howard! And now we are Reconciling Methodists. He would say perhaps, "What took you so long."

Saddened to see another one of our J. M. Holt families' parents leave us. Howard always had a smile and sparkle in his eyes - even when refereeing. Loved his joy for life and his care and compassion for all of us. He will be remembered and missed.

so so many memories at the Stroble homestead! Howard was an amazing man that put up with a lot of us girls for many years - even when he was gifted with a son later on....more girls showed up to play with Zack!
His only rule that I can remember was no dogs.....so instead they filled the home with every other creature....ducks, rabbits, squirrels......going there on Springhill was like going to a farm!
and now Alice and Howard are together again. We are all blessed for knowing them.
