News Death Notice

HESSELL, Joseph "Joe" age 91 of Dayton, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014 at his residence. Joe was born on May 25, 1923 in Covington, Kentucky, son of the late Joseph and Erdine Hessell, Sr. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Charma Kay Hessell; daughter, Debbie Bonin of Charlton, MA; son, Jeff (Mary) Hessell of Beavercreek, OH; step children, Chanda Dicke of Charleston, SC, Bob (Katy) Shroder of Warren, OH, Ron (Sue) Shroder of West Chester, OH & Steve (Kim) Shroder of Bellbrook, OH; 15 grandchildren; and Kay's foster daughter Pamela Fry and her 2 children. Joe was a graduate of West Carrollton High School and attended Miami University. During World War II, he proudly joined the U.S. Army and served as a Paratrooper in the European Theater where he received a Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge, and other medals of valor for his service. Joe was employed by N.C.R. for over 46 years and retired as General Manager of Old River Park. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME - FAR HILLS CHAPEL, 5471 Far Hills Ave., Dayton, Ohio 45429, with the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. Burial Beavertown Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3797 Summit Glen Dr., Dayton, Ohio 45449 Condolences may be made to tobiasfuneralhome.com

Kay,so sorry to hear about Joe. We're so glad we got to visit you guys so recently. When you called us the night he died, we were touched by your telling how you had Just expressed your love for each other a short time before he died...a very precious memory for you to cherish forever. Joe was a good guy who lived a good, long life with a gal he truly loved. May he rest in peace, and may God be with you both. Our sincere condolences and love.

It is my pleasure to have known Joe as a friend, a kind man and the handyman who worked on and made our TV's worth keeping a while longer. I have many fond memories of Joe and his Water Skiing exploits. Our paths first crossed in the late 50s, when Joe and other key members of the Dayton Water Ski Club came to Piqua to help us put on a local Tournament. I was there when Joe made his first 100 ft. Jump.
As the years passed, I came to recognize Joe as an extremely capable Judge, as well as a Top Level Skier.
Joe was always willing to stay late at a Tournament and help with getting it completed.
Many fond memories of Joe and Debbie for many years of Water Skiing.
I am a better person for having known Joe Hessell. A FIRST CLASS individual.
I will definitely be looking to renew our friendship when join you.

Kay and Debbie,
Joe has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. A part of the West Carrollton threesome of Joe, Chuck (Ely) and Jack (Chambers). The stories of their exploits formed a part of the backdrop of my youth. Many of the details have faded with time but the flavor has helped shape me and my life. The Flyers were the constant connection for so long. I still have seats and Cindee and I were in Memphis cheering for UD this spring. When she and I are watching the Flyers, conversation always seems to include a story about Dad and his great friends, Joe and Chuck. Gone but not forgotten.

Dear Debbie and Family, Sorry to hear about Joe. I met Joe a long time ago when he joined our ski club in Celina, Ohio. For the Hessell family, Gene and I are so sorry to learn about losing Joe! I worked with Kay in Probate Court for 18 years and our families were all entwined. We knew each others families better than we knew our own! Joe and Kay were always so great to all of us. Joe kept us in t.v. repair and Kay kept us in stitches.
