In Memory of Dr. Kodem S. Rao

Dr. Kodem S. Rao died peacefully on August 22, 2025. He was at home in Dayton, Ohio, with his wife, Liz, and his son, Adam, by his side. A widely revered cardiovascular surgeon, Kodem impacted countless lives during his distinguished career.

Born on June 11, 1936 in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, India, Kodem began his journey in medicine at the Andhra Medical College in Andhra Pradesh, India. He later studied at the University of Illinois. In 1976, he moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he practiced at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Upper Valley Medical Center. He worked as a cardiovascular surgeon until he retired in 2018.

Kodem was married to his wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Rao, for 53 years, and they had one son, Adam Rao. Kodem loved his family, his career, and his country. He earned his U.S. citizenship in 1979, and he was deeply proud to be an American.

Dr. Kodem Rao has been cremated, and his son will accompany him back to India, where he will be memorialized in his home country.
