Larry VANDERBEEK Obituary

News Death Notice

VANDERBEEK, Larry Dean 65, of Germantown, Ohio, died unexpectedly on Friday, October 4, 2013. Larry was born in Illinois to the late Dr. Bernard and Genevieve Vanderbeek, founder of the First Presbyterian Church in Holland Michigan. Larry is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 43 years, Jean (Culley) Vanderbeek. Also surviving are his daughters Cindy Vanderbeek-Dunn (Brian) of Mason and Amy Manning (Rikk) of Farmersville and grandchildren Branden and Avery Dunn, Kira and Lily Manning. His daughter Carrie Vanderbeek preceded him in death. Larry was a kind and loving husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hiking in the woods, walking the beaches of the Carolinas and travelling around the world with his wife. His grandchildren will remember their Opa as the vivacious grandfather that encouraged and participated in their mischievous acts. Larry enjoyed home improvement projects in the house he and Jean designed. His favorite past times were watching various activities his children and grandchildren participated in and rooting for the University of Tennessee and WVU football teams...especially when they were winning. Larry was a graduate of Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV and earned an MBA from West Virginia University. He spent his professional career with Mead, Meadwestvaco and retired as an ERP Consultant. After his retirement, he worked as a Senior SAP consultant for NewPage. Larry loved to work in his garden and was a seasonal employee for Bern's Garden Center. Larry unselfishly contributed his talents as chairperson of the Valley View Water and Sewer District. Also surviving are his siblings, Dr. Randall Vanderbeek and wife Patty of Asheville, NC, Don Vanderbeek of Malibu, CA (formerly of Germantown), Nancy Elliott of Athens, GA along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his sister Sally Hutchison, wife of Bill of Jaspar, GA. Memorial service will be held Saturday, October 12th at 11:00 AM in the grassy area at the end of Old Mill Rd. in the Germantown Metro Parks. Casual clothing recommended. The family welcomes everyone to Jean and Larry's home immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible contributions may be made to The Muse Machine Carrie Vanderbeek Scholarship Fund, mailed to 7205 Stiver Road, Germantown, OH 45327.
