Nancy MULLINS Obituary

MULLINS, Nancy

Nancy Mullins passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on November 17, 2021, of a heart attack at 75 years of age.

She was raised outside Chicago, Illinois. Music was a large part of her life. Nancy started taking violin lessons at a young age. She earned a Bachelor Degree in Music Education in 1968 from Western Kentucky University and a Master of Music Degree in 1976 from Wright State University where she was principal violist as well as concert master. She taught orchestra, chorus, general music and band in the Vandalia-Butler city schools for thirty years, after which she taught private lessons. She joined the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra in 1977 as a member of the First Violin section and performed with the Philharmonic for 38 years. She was also a member of Kenley Players and the Dayton Opera Orchestra. Besides music, Nancy loved gardening, cooking, traveling and her precious dogs.

She is survived by her sisters, Carolyn Carpenter (Jim) and Barbara Nolan (Henry), nieces Amy Wheeler (George) and Anne Carpenter (Doug), nephew Andrew Carpenter, great nieces Rachel and Charlie, and her companion Cecil Teague. She will be missed by family, friends and her colleagues at the Philharmonic.

A Celebration of Life for Nancy will be held on Saturday, May 28th at 10:00 am at David's United Church of Christ in Kettering, Ohio.

Just found this, and sorry to have missed the service. Mrs. Mullins was my high school orchestra teacher from 1994-1998. She always encouraged and challenged me, and worked hard with our little orchestra (several of whom went on to pursue music degrees at college). She was interesting because in addition to her day job of teaching music, she also played in the Dayton Philharmonic, and would tell us stories sometimes which gave us a real world example of a professional musician. One way she really helped me towards my first career as a music teacher was she drove me an hour on her own time and money to help me choose a new violin in Columbus, so I would be able to perform at a higher level. That was something definitely above and beyond her job description, and I still appreciate that. Sad I never got to tell her this.

I´ve been searching obituaries since I finally found a Facebook announcement in January on the music store site where she taught. How I missed this is beyond me as I check Legacy often. Nancy was a dear friend and colleague 50 years ago. We last visited when she came to Maine in 2018. Whenever we talked it was as if we´d never been apart. She was a forever friend and I miss her. My condolences to her sisters and their families. She was a bright light in the lives of many.

My son, Noah, age 11, took violin lessons from Nancy for about a year. He loved her and was very attached to her; he was devastated when we learned of her passing. Nancy was his first violin teacher, and I value her kindness and patience with him! Our deepest sympathies!
